Friends of Blount County Animal Center is Hiring a Veterinary Assistant Near Maryville, TN

Reports To: Staff Veterinarian

Location: Blount County Animal Center

Position Type: Part Time (30 hours/week)

Hourly Wage: $13-16

Job Summary:

The offices and operations of an animal shelter and spay/neuter clinic can be high stress and very busy at times. The Veterinary Technician is responsible for performing skilled work in the intake and care of Blount County Animal Center animals. The position is responsible for ensuring policy and procedure compliance, performing animal care duties, managing animal placement, providing customer service, and performing related clerical tasks. The position works under general supervision according to some procedures. It is a little bit of everything but will be very rewarding to be the voice for those who can’t speak.

Responsibilities:

This position will primarily be focused on the welfare and maintenance of dogs and cats in the shelter. Under the direction of veterinary staff, ensure efficient and accurate examinations for intake of new animals, compassionate treatment for in-house patients, and assist in the daily routines of managing the health of about 150 to 200 animals.

  • Provide basic medical care to shelter animals. Read and understand animal records, and have a basic knowledge of medical condition processes.
  • Administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes, venipuncture, calculating drug doses.
  • Complete patient status reports, assist with patient receiving, perform or assist with specimen collection, enter requests and patient charges into the computer system, and communicate animal medical information with the veterinary team.
  • Provides customer service to the public on a limited basis, including assisting with locating lost animals, providing information on animal adoption and care, and assisting with the adoption process.
  • Assesses health and attitude of animals upon arrival at the Center; administers vaccinations and medications, and tests animals as required; completes vaccination records and paperwork relating to breed, age, disposition, origin and sex of animals.
  • Ensures care of animals by working with dedicated kennel staff.
  • Acts as liaison with foster care and other volunteers and the veterinary staff to ensure responsible care of animals with education, help, or advice.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as providing information for preparation of performing data entry, setting up and maintaining records or telephoning.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends technical or professional classes or workshops to improve technical or professional skills.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50-100 pounds).

Work Environment: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, or traffic hazards, pathogens and bio-hazards.

Preferred :

  • Licensing in the state of Tennessee or working toward licensure
  • Experience in veterinary medicine with particular emphasis on shelter medicine
  • An associate’s degree or the equivalent of two years of college or vocational school education in veterinarian technician or a closely related field or two years of related experience preferred, High school or equivalent required

Schedule: Thursday, Friday, Saturday

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 per week
