Description/Summary

The purpose of the full-time Cook's Helper position is to assist the cook(s) in the preparation of meals for residents, staff, and public at Pleasant View Nursing Home.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Assist charge cook in all areas of work.
  • When adequately skilled in these areas, will be expected, in the absence of the charge cook, to assume his/her duties.
  • Supervise and prepare meals in large quantity; bake bread, rolls, pastries, etc.
  • Supervise and assist in entire daily clean up procedure.
  • Assign daily tasks to food service worker(s).
  • Supervise and assist in preparation of foods at the proper time for special diets and non-ambulatory residents and ambulatory residents.
  • Perform any other tasks that may be assigned.
  • Relieve or substitute for missing employees if needed.
  • Fill food requisitions from Nursing and Activities.
Resident Rights
  1. Maintain the confidentiality of resident health care information.
  2. Uphold Resident Rights
  3. Report allegations of resident abuse or neglect immediately to the Administrator. Safeguard the resident from harm.
Personnel Functions
  1. Understand and follow the Green County Employee Handbook.
  2. Follow facility guidelines and responsible to read and understand updates, memos, and educational sessions.
  3. Fulfill work schedule by arriving to the work station at the start of the shift. Meet attendance standards. Will fill in for open shifts.
4. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other departments assisting one another as needed and when requested. Be a positive team member. Refrain from
speaking negatively, engaging in gossip and the criticism of fellow employees.
  1. Be supportive of the nurse, the NCC and/or RN Supervisor and the DON. Communicate in a positive manner. Be an active member of the improvement process by presenting concerns along with suggestions in a timely manner.
6. Communicate concerns, questions, frustrations and complaints to the supervisor in a timely and confidential manner. In the event that this communication is not
resolved, communication of this will be presented to the Administrator.
  1. Understand that performance and conduct reflects positive customer service to internal and external customers.
  2. Uphold the privacy and confidentiality of resident information at all times.
  3. Attend all mandatory in-services or complete the make-up session in a timely manner.
  4. Attend and participates in unit meetings, department meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  5. Keep personal items, and cell phone in the employee locker or in the employee's vehicle. Understand that cell phones are not to be used during paid work time.
  6. Use the facility computer for resident documentation only. Understand that the computer is facility property and is not to be used for personal use for any reason or method.
  7. Understand that job performance will be reviewed for a clear understanding of expectations.
  8. Understand that job performance that does not meet standards and guidelines may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
  • Prepare tray and menu labels and tickets utilizing computer equipment.
  • Order products from storage if needed for completion of menu item.
  • Assist with dishwashing procedure if needed.
Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Function
High school diploma with one year commercial or institutional food preparation experience, preferably in a long-term care setting, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
An excellent attendance record is required.
  • Have a basic understanding of caring for the elderly and special needs

  • Have a basic understanding of change of condition
  • Have a basic understanding of accident prevention and safety
  • Have a basic understanding of Fire Safety and Tornado Safety.
  • Have a basic understanding of dementia and approaches in caring for a person with dementia
  • Have a basic understanding of what to do when a resident presents in a combative, aggressive or difficult manner.
  • Have a basic understanding of Infection Control Practice
Pleasant View Nursing Home is a 24 hour facility which requires continuous care for residents, therefore employees must meet attendance standards by arriving to work on time, work all scheduled shifts and extra shifts that are agreed to work and have an overall excellent attendance record.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
  • Ability to classify, compute, and tabulate data and information, following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgment. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information. Ability to assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data and information.
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate, and clarify to others within well established guidelines and standards, as well as the ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests.
  • Ability to utilize descriptive data and information, such as recipes, diet manuals, menus, work schedules, cook books, cleaning charts, residents' menu requests and general operating manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Food Service Supervisor, nursing staff, kitchen aides, housekeeping, and maintenance personnel. Ability to supervise work to others as may be required.
Mathematical Ability
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and be able to calculate volume and ratios.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to use functioning reasoning development in the performance of semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action.
  • Ability to apply situational reasoning ability by exercising judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of predefined duties subject to frequent change.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring simple, periodic adjustments, such as food mixers, blenders, slicers, grinders, and steam kettles. Ability to move and guide material using simple tools.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing slightly skilled movements such as cutting food. Ability to use food preparation utensils. Ability to stand for 2 or more hours or extended periods of time during a work day.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, involving climbing, balancing, kneeling, stooping and crouching.
  • Ability to exert mildly heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work including lifting/carrying (0-34 lbs. approximately 34-66%; 35-100 lbs. approximately 1-33%).
  • Ability to place and remove items at or above eye level.
  • Ability to combine and harmonize characteristics of colors, tastes, odors, textures of food. Ability to recognize harmonious or contrasting combinations of characteristics as well as the ability to recognize individual similarities or differences between characteristics.
Environmental Adaptability
  • In regards to environment factors work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions with potential factors such as odors, smoke, potential violence, noise, disease.
