Sheridan County YMCA is Hiring a Swim Lesson Instructor Near Sheridan, WY

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Aquatic Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching non-swimmers how to swim in a safe, comfortable and fun environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Swim Instructors are expected to fulfill the following functions:

  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly and ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
  • Evaluate students’ progress and complete required paperwork in a timely manner
  • Use problem solving and creative skills to identify and resolve challenges that students encounter
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment
  • Observe and clear the deck continually of potential hazards (kickboards, toys and any other obstructions)
  • Know, follow and enforce pool rules and emergency action plan
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned
  • Make prior arrangements for a qualified replacement if you are going to be absent
  • Swim Instructors are responsible for the children in their class for the entire 30 minute swim period. Do not ask another child’s parent to take someone to the restroom. If the child’s parent is not available, ask the Swim Lesson Supervisor to take the child to the restroom.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the Y, encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers and convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, Swim Instructors will:

  • Pursue/participate in ongoing training
  • Participate in the annual campaign by giving, campaigning or both
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-services

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to perform all physical demands of the position including leading classes, walking, standing, bending, reaching and lifting

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 14 years of age.
  • Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
  • New Employee Orientation within 90 days of hire.

WAGE AND HOUR INFORMATION

This is a part time position. The starting wage is $11.20 hourly.
