General Summary :

Under close supervision performs routine grounds maintenance on district properties. Performs tasks such as maintaining athletic fields, cutting grass, operating dump truck and tractor equipment, etc.

Performs light maintenance in other areas such as electrical, plumbing and carpentry.

Essential Functions :

Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.

Maintains the school ball fields and surrounding grounds which involves cutting grass, painting lines, cleaning baselines, fertilizing and watering grass, etc.

Drives a dump truck as needed to haul tractors, fill soil, sand, and other equipment and materials.

Operates tractors to cut grass and to clear and grade fields and other grounds areas.

Performs various groundskeeping duties such as cutting grass, planting and pruning shrubs, seeding / fertilizing and watering grounds, rolling sod, cutting and removing trees and debris, etc.

Maintains and makes minor repairs to equipment used in daily activities.

Hauls sand to playground areas and places sand around equipment.

Delivers various materials and equipment to school locations as assigned.

Provides assistance in other maintenance areas as assigned which involves carpentry, plumbing, painting, roofing, small engine repair, and / or electrical maintenance.

Operates various types of equipment such as disc harrows, lawn tractors, bush hogs, tractors, forklifts, tillers, saws, mowers, etc.

Performs other related duties as required.

High school graduate with vocational / technical school training in general maintenance

Minimum of one year experience in grounds and general maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Valid South Carolina commercial driver's license

Knowledge / Skills :

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities.

Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public.

Working Conditions :

Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, dusts, and wetness.

Frequent contact with pesticides and grounds maintenance chemicals. Heavy physical exertion is occasionally required to lift and move objects weighing up to one hundred fifty pounds.

Local travel required; no overnight travel required.

Responsibility :

No budgetary or supervisory responsibility.

Evaluation :

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s

policy on evaluation of support personnel.
