Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Dean of Educational Operations, the Tagalog Interpreter provides medical interpreter services for periodic community events hosted by the Bayanihan Project of CUSM (California University of Science and Medicine). The purpose of the Bayanihan Project is to address existing health disparities and improve understanding of the specific health needs of Filipino Americans in the Inland Empire. We function as a mobile health intervention group where we go out in the community and provide free culturally tailored health screenings and education. We counsel on multiple health topics, such as diabetes, hypertension, nutrition, and stroke. This project is led by a team of medical students, pre-medical students, community members, and physicians.
Essential Functions
· Provide medical interpretation between medical staff and patient, from Tagalog to English.
· Communicate medical terminology in simple terms.
· Maintain patient confidentiality.
· Interact with physician supervisors, patients, and student volunteers.
· Available for work during weekends between 9 am – 3 pm, up to two (2) times a month.
· Other Duties as Assigned.
Required Educational Qualifications
· High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) degree in related field and intermediate proficiency in speaking Tagalog.

· Ability to commute between University/Program sites and events.
· Ability to effectively communicate in both English and Tagalog.
· Ability to comprehend medical terminology.
· Basic knowledge of linguistic and cultures.
· Detail and accuracy oriented.
· Knowledge of University/Program policies and procedures.
· Excellent customer service skills.
· Ability to adapt to a dynamic environment.
· Ability to translate real time by listening, and relay information verbally.
· Ability to react in a calm and effective way in various situations.
· Ability to work independently, as well as in group settings, all while maintaining professionalism.
· Ability to follow HIPAA regulations, requirements, and guidelines.
· Flexibility in work availability to accommodate evening and/or weekend hours.
Preferred Qualifications
· Previous interpreter experience.
· Previous experience with interpreting medical terminology.
· Proficient in reading and writing Tagalog.
· Valid driver’s license.
· Experience in higher education, medical education, or university environment.
