Story County is Hiring a Light Equipment Operator (Equipment Operator I) Near Nevada, IA

Performs manual work operating a variety of equipment used in road maintenance, repair and construction; performs manual tasks in maintenance or construction projects, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Operates medium and light equipment such as single and tandem axle dump truck, light front-end loader, backhoe, broom/sweeper, light industrial tractor, and power mowing equipment in a variety of road maintenance, repair, and construction duties.
  • Operates a variety of manually operated auxiliary equipment such as air hammer and tamper, in conjunction with heavier equipment on various maintenance, repair and construction projects.
  • Operates oil distributor, heats oil in tank, manipulates controls, and applies oil to road surface.
  • Removes old road surface with hand tools, drives oil distributor truck, and sprays oil to patch holes.
  • Holds slow/stop sign and directs traffic around road maintenance, repair, or construction site.
  • Operates truck with snow blade, wing, and sander; manipulates controls, lowers/raises blade and spreads materials to remove snow and ice from road surfaces; mounts and dismounts plow and blades.
  • Performs required manual labor tasks as crew member involved in road, bridge, tile, or culvert maintenance, repair, and construction projects such as dig post holes, place/replace signs, put up and take down barricades, patch pavements, paint/repair barricades; shovels snow from sidewalks on departmental property.
  • Operates power equipment and uses hand tools to cut trees and brush and clean out culverts; operates or feeds chipper; treats stumps after brush cutting.
  • Operates light loader and loads truck with materials such as gravel or snow; drives truck and hauls load to predetermined site; manipulates controls and dumps load.
  • Performs a variety of shop maintenance work such as oil change, grease job, sweep the floor, and back up assistant to regular mechanic(s).
  • Maintains reports on work projects such as work completed and time spent.
  • Drives dump truck to haul dirt and rock.
  • Operates equipment such as skid loader, front end loader, patcher, air compressor and attachments, and several forms of snow removal and ice control equipment.
  • Performs labor functions for the purpose of installing drainage pipes, repairing culverts, repairing bridges, buildings and groups maintenance, and repairing and installing tile.
  • May function as checker and weigh and inspect loads of rock and said to determine if materials meet specs for use in road maintenance, repair, and construction.
  • Maintains clean work area in assigned shed such as sweep floor and other custodial duties; performs building maintenance as necessary.
Thorough knowledge in the operation of light or medium equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge of county and state traffic laws; general knowledge of the practices of road construction, repair and maintenance; ability to operate equipment such as a dump truck, skid loader, front end loader, and snow and ice control equipment; ability to apply road construction, repair and maintenance methods and practices; ability to read maps and drawings; ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions; ability to formulate safe operational policies and procedures; ability to maintain records and activity reports; ability to operate standard tools and equipment of the trades; ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software; ability to train others on the safe and efficient operation of given tools, equipment and software; ability to supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and the general public.
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience working with equipment, such as snow removal or dirt work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License

Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting; no special vision is required; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
Environmental Conditions This work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
