Job Description Blackbird Farm is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating students about sustainable living, agriculture, and livestock at our organically certified garden and property in Anderson Valley, California. We offer numerous learning opportunities and encourage our students and guests to experience adventure through archery, canoeing, high ropes activities, and more through our Camp Blackbird program. We believe in engaging students in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making through a process of learning by doing. We work to build self-awareness, confidence, and teamwork skills through experiential learning. Our team is full of grounded but adventurous people who love to lead by example and work as an integral part of a balanced team where every member is essential. Blackbird also hosts numerous private functions, so we're looking for people who can bring their A-game with guests & students alike. The Head Chef is an integral part of the Blackbird Farm Leadership team. They will oversee all daily functions of the kitchen department including administrative duties and ensuring the kitchen team prepares and serves three nutritious meals daily for students, staff, and guests. Responsibilities and Duties*: Manage, supervise, and train kitchen staff Create and implement menus Order and maintain supplies Coordinate with the Garden department to efficiently utilize produce grown on the farm Create a meat processing schedule with the Barn department throughout the year Ensure food is properly stored following all California Health Codes Develop and facilitate training and professional development for the kitchen staff Education, Experience, and Requirements: Culinary Arts Degree or a minimum of 3 years of equivalent experience Management experience preferred. ServSafe Certified preferred. Must be available to work weekends. Employees must pass the TB test and Livescan background clearance. With a large kitchen, BBF’s programs provide farm-to-table instruction with classes in cheese making, mustard and jam making, and bread making, using organic ingredients grown onsite in the garden and student maintained farm plot. The farm’s year-round staff teaches students gardening fundamentals and the knowledge and skills needed to create raised garden beds to maintain at their school site and homes.
