Outreach Specialist

This Outreach Specialist is an externally-faced position focused on new client generation. Specifically, the work of this position is concentrated on outreach to the unhoused, homebound, or institutionalized population in the Disability Advocates of Northwest North Carolina service area. This position primarily does field work, with direct outreach to nonprofit, religious, and governmental organizations that serve the unhoused, homebound and institutionalized population, as well as the individuals they serve for the purpose of building awareness of Disability Advocates of Northwest North Carolina and its programs. The goal is to provide education about Social Security disability in general, eligibility criteria, and the application process, and to provide support for individuals engaging in this process.

Job responsibilities include development and execution of a strategy for outreach to the unhoused, homebound and institutionalized population, which includes organizing and managing outreach programs, identifying and developing relationships with leaders of organizations that serve the unhoused, homebound and institutionalized, occasionally making presentations to educate and develop support for Disability Advocates’ programs and services, performing client intake and completing disability applications, and other actions necessary to educate and assist eligible unhoused, homebound, and institutionalized individuals in obtaining Social Security disability.

This work also requires administrative tasks such as developing and maintaining client records, documenting and producing reports of outreach activities, and arranging client appointments.

The Outreach Specialist should be a part time paid employee. Optimally, the person in this position would have the following knowledge and skills:

• Relevant work experience in the development and implementation of programs serving the unhoused, homebound, and institutionalized
• SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery) trained/certified preferred
• Working knowledge of all aspects of Social Security disability programs and application processes preferred
• General knowledge of related social service programs in the Disability Advocates service area
• Strong interpersonal skills
• The ability to effectively interact with individuals in the community at all levels from organizational leadership to unhoused, homebound and institutionalized individuals
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Experience in speaking/presenting to groups, as well as working one-on-one with individuals
• Flexibility in schedule and work location
• Computer use proficiency
• Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred
• Reliable transportation REQUIRED

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 20 per week
