DEFINITION
To perform a wide variety of support and clerical library duties and responsibilities involved in operating and maintaining a school site library including acquisition, cataloging, circulation, distribution, and inventory management of library resources, instructional resources, or other media. Assist patrons. Assist in the development and implementation of library skills curriculum.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Classes in this series are distinguished by level of education attained and years of experience. The Library Aide classification requires equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the School Site Administrator and Lead Library Aide, or designee. General direction received by the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, or designee.
Representative Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Develop and maintain school site library resources and instructional resources; select and order new books, periodicals, reference materials, instructional resources, and other educational media.
  2. Prepare and give programs to children on use of library and programs to encourage reading; develop grade level instructional materials.
  3. Maintain a variety of records and filing systems pertaining to the acquisition, inventory, and distribution of library resources, instructional resources, and other educational media.
  4. Receive new books, periodicals, reference materials and audio-visual materials, instructional resources, or other educational media; check orders against invoices, requisitions and purchase orders; prepare materials for distribution including basic cataloging and affixing identification labels to materials and/or using bar coding inventory management systems.
  5. Check out instructional resources to patrons; check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; register new patrons; prepare list of overdue books and prepare overdue slips, by use of computer programs, as well as manually.
  6. Repair books including reinforcing spines, taping torn pages, and retyping pockets and cards.
  7. Assist students and teachers in making effective use of library facilities and materials; assist patrons in locating materials; answer questions and provide information.
  8. Maintain card catalogs, site shelf list, and other files.
  9. Conduct site library inventory; inventory books, periodicals, reference materials, audio-visual equipment, and instructional resources using automated systems or manual processes.
  10. Compile data and prepare summary activity reports including circulation and other statistics.
  11. Collect payment for lost instructional materials; and maintain appropriate records to submit to accounting department.
  12. Locate books and other materials using index and catalog guides.
  13. Retrieve and shelve books and other materials.
  14. Perform routine clerical assignments, including typing and answering telephones, related to the library.
  15. Prepare and maintain displays and other exhibits in the library.
  16. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year of general clerical experience or related work. Library experience highly desirable.

Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Requirements Specified under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
Applicants must meet the ESSA requirements in one of the following ways:
  1. Completed at least two years of study an institution of higher education (48 college units); or
  2. Obtained an Associate's or higher degree; or
  3. Demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics.
Typing Requirement
30 net words per minute
A typing test will be administered to verify typing speed.
If you are attempting to satisfy the ESSA academic proficiency requirement, official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree awarded or completion of 48 college units. If official transcripts are not attached to the application, you will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment in addition to the job-specific examination for this position.
Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing

Work Schedule
This position typically works part-time, 5.75 hours per day, and observes a 10-month calendar.
Salary The initial hiring rate for new employees is at the first step of the appropriate five-step salary schedule for the position. The probationary period is 130-work days in paid status. Upon completing the probationary period for permanent status, a one-step salary advance will be granted and shall establish an anniversary date upon which all future advances on the salary range shall be based.
Examination
Testing components may consist of the following: written multiple-choice exam, skills performance exam, and structured oral interview. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to take the exam and notified via email communication of the scheduled date, time, and location. A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.

Holidays and Leaves There are seventeen (17) paid holidays that fall within the work year, pursuant to the District's Collective Bargaining Agreement with California Schools Employees Association Chapter 296 (CSEA).
Sick leave shall be granted in the proportion of daily hours worked. Vacation is earned at the prescribed rate as part of compensation, and does not become vested until after completion of the initial probationary period.
Work Environment This job is primarily performed indoors in a library environment that is climate-controlled. Exposure to seasonal weather when walking outdoors; noise from standard office and technology equipment, school bells, students and staff.
Physical Demands
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following demands: Sitting, standing, walking; some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, twisting at waist; dexterity of hands and fingers for keyboarding/typing, handling books and other materials, use of standard office equipment and other technologies; vision and hearing in normal range with or without correction.
