Fire & Life Safety Educator (Full-Time)Statesville Fire DepartmentSalary Range: $39,520.00 - $65,208.00Closing Date: Open Until FilledJob OverviewResponsible for developing, organizing, and delivering fire and life safety education programs to meet the needs of the community.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.Leads the Fire and Life Safety Education Program; develops curriculum and teaching aids; documents programs for the general public and school-age children; purchases supplies; and monitors the budget for this program.Coordinates classes with fire companies on the use of fire extinguishers, evacuation procedures, and other safety topics for businesses, civic groups, and neighborhood associations.Plans special programs and events promoting fire safety; presents fire and life safety informational programs to a variety of public, private, and community groups. Represents the Fire Marshal’s Office and its mission at various local events or programs.Coordinates requests from the public for equipment displays and demonstrations. Transcribes dictation, assembles, and types a variety of documents, technical and statistical reports, and data for publication. Schedules Fire & Life Safety Division appointments, inspections, training programs, and other routine matters.Explains departmental and city policies and procedures for employees and the public.Conducts life safety inspections, within the level of certification, of new and existing commercial establishments, multi-family residences, and schools to determine the existence of fire hazards, the efficiency of fire protection equipment, and general compliance with state and county fire codes and fire prevention standards.Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of fire safety laws, rules, regulations, state fire codes, and fire prevention methods.Thorough knowledge of the occupational safety hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions.Working knowledge of modern firefighting techniques and equipment.Working knowledge of the standard practices, procedures, and methods of fire inspection, prevention, and safety.Working knowledge of educational methods, instruction techniques, and learning characteristics of program target groups.Working knowledge of the NC Building Code as it affects fire inspection work.Skill in developing and delivering age and group-appropriate fire safety and prevention curriculum and materials.Skill in computer operations, including word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, presentation software, and online media.Ability to plan and carry out events and activities for a variety of audiences and groups.Ability to make oral presentations before large groups of people with the aid of audio-visual equipment.Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, volunteers, public officials, emergency agencies, media representatives, and the general public.Job Related Physical Activity RequirementsThis position involves medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word, and to convey detailed or important instructions to others; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.Working ConditionsThe employee is generally not subject to adverse environmental conditions; however, when conducting life and safety inspections, the employee will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, gases, oils, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, work in narrow passageways, and uneven surfaces.
