Description
This position pays $120 per day during the 2024 summer camp season.
The Leadership Program Manager is responsible for overseeing the leadership program team in implementing and delivering Camp Menzies' counselor in training (CIT) and wrangler in training (WIT) programs for campers entering grades 10-12. Under the supervision of the Assistant Camp Director, this position ensures activities are safe, fun, appropriate to the campers' age and abilities and follows Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
1. Program
  • Promotes progression in activities and experiences, considering age level, abilities, and interests of campers, specifically in the Leadership programs
  • Provides resources and guidance to Leadership Mentors in delivering the CIT and WIT program, which includes facilitating workshop sessions, scheduling shadowing sessions, and creating lesson plans
  • Assists Assistant Camp Director with design and implementation of Counselor in Training program, and help aid to create a pipeline of camper to staff
  • Assists with all assigned all-camp program activities, which could include first day rotations, campfire, all-camp events, tortoise time and themed meals
  • Serves as the subject matter expert for Girl Scout programming for grades 10-12
  • Responsible for evaluation and reporting of camper experience in the CIT and WIT programs, including grant deliverables if applicable
2. Supervision of Camp Staff as assigned
  • Provides feedback and guidance to staff based on regular observations
  • With the assistance of the Assistant Camp Director, conducts periodic evaluations and supervisory conferences
  • Oversees team of 2-4 staff, including training, coaching, evaluating performance
  • Perform daily check-ins with team members to inform of any changes to schedules or operations and check on health and wellbeing of each team member
  • Plan and facilitate pre-session team meetings to ensure team is prepared for upcoming camp session
3. Serve as camp volunteer liaison
  • Welcome and orient volunteers (18 years old) as they arrive on camp property
  • Assign volunteers to program areas and sleeping units for duration of each camp session
  • Be the point of contact for all camp volunteers during the camp session
  • Perform daily check-ins with volunteers to inform of any changes to schedules or operations and check on health and wellbeing of each volunteer
  • Ensure volunteers have a fun, safe experience at camp, which may include post camp communication and appreciation in collaboration with the Episodic Volunteer Specialist
4. Assist with Camp Operations
  • Serves on the camp management team and is responsible for creating a culture of inclusion, belonging, and support
  • Assist with planning and implementing the camp schedule with the other managers prior to the first day of the session
  • In collaboration with camp directors, plan, conduct, and participate in staff training
  • Ensure Girl Scout ratio standards are followed at all times
  • With the Camp Directors, follows through and files camper discipline reports each session as needed
  • Supports all areas of camps as needed
Other Job Duties:
  • Attends administrative staff meetings
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned
  • Assist with camp healthcare needs as needed, including camper check-in, supervision of ill campers, and non-emergency transport
  • Assist with camp emergency procedures as outlined in the Camp Menzies EAP
  • Drive campers, staff, and equipment for trips off camp property
  • Assist with camper units as needed, including staff coverage
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of camp after each session and during pre-camp and end-of-season cleaning period
Qualifications
  • Minimum age 21
  • One year of supervisory experience, desired
  • One year of camp or programming experience
  • CA driver's license with clean driving record and a minimum of five years driving experience
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR desired (training will be provided)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Training and experience in working with children and teenagers desired
  • Knowledge of arts activities, nature activities, and basic outdoor skills
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions
  • Ability to motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse cultures and all organizational levels
  • Ability to effectively and tactfully supervise adults
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills

Physical and Intellectual Aspects of the Position:
  • Ability to communicate in English to provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS
We are a Girl Scout camp. We expect this position to work collaboratively and closely with Girl Scouts for the greater part of the role. Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires the ability to listen to others, observe others' actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and other environmental conditions.
While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSHCC mission and daily work.
