Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serves as an expert in the field of microbial genomics with a strong focus on analysis of environmental microbiomes from samples relevant to Hawai'i and Pacific region ecology, local aquaculture and agriculture, and environmental concerns that affect the people of Hawai'i. Areas of research addressing the role of the microbiome in aquaculture productivity using a breadth of molecular, genetic, bioinformatic and microbial culturing methods are highly desirable.
   
2. Manages the day to day technical, training, and administrative operations for the Microbial Genomics and Analytical Laboratory (MGAL), a core multi-user research facility, and collaborates with other faculty members at PBRC and the University of Hawai'i, and researchers at other institutions.
   
3. Develop and lead and extramurally funded research program involving the characterization and function of the microbiome and its role in environmental or host health.
   
4. Publishes research in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
   
5. Writes and secures extramural research grants for conducting innovative environmental microbiome research.
   
6. Supervise and mentor students and laboratory assistants.
   
7. Serve the department, school, university, and scientific and professional communities through professional service activities.
   
8. Other scholarly duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. PhD in a biological science or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
   
2. One (1) year of experience as a postdoctoral fellow or equivalent in microbiology, microbial genomics, or related field.
   
3. Ability to apply, execute, troubleshoot, and modify advanced molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics analysis, and high throughput genomic analysis.
   
4. Ability to generate independent research projects, publications and grant proposals.
   
5. Ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants when appropriate.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Strong interest or background in microbiology.
2. Ability to develop and optimize new molecular and diagnostic protocols for users' samples.
