JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Linguist to join our team. The Linguist will play a crucial role in Alutiiq language revitalization efforts, curriculum development, and community engagement in Bristol Bay. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation and promotion of Alaska Native languages while fostering a deeper understanding of cultural heritage. This position is supported through the TC2H and Bubble Alaska Native Education Program grant projects. This position is responsible for some of the achievements listed in the outcomes of both project logic models.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct comprehensive documentation of Bristol Bay languages, including phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary, to create valuable linguistic resources, specifically focused on Alutiiq Language.
Collaborate with educators to develop culturally relevant language curricula for various age groups, ensuring alignment with academic standards and community needs, specifically focused on Alutiiq Language.
Design and implement language revitalization programs, workshops, and events to engage community members and encourage active participation in language learning, specifically focused on Alutiiq Language.
Work closely with Alaska Native communities to understand their linguistic needs, preferences, and challenges, fostering a collaborative and inclusive approach, specifically focused on Alutiiq Language
Stay abreast of linguistic research and trends, applying findings to enhance language preservation strategies and educational materials.
Conduct outreach activities in schools, community centers, and other educational institutions to promote the importance of Alaska Native languages and the benefits of language preservation.
Assist in securing funding for language preservation initiatives by contributing to grant proposals and collaborating with the development team.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
Strong background in indigenous languages, particularly Alutiiq Language.
Experience in language documentation, curriculum adaptation and/or development, and language revitalization efforts.
Knowledge of educational principles and practices, especially in the context of indigenous education.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including community members, educators, and funding agencies.
Ability to work collaboratively with our Alutiiq knowledge bearers and learners, tribes, and Bristol Bay Borough and Lake & Peninsula school districts to achieve BBF Program and ANEP project objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's or Ph.D. in Linguistics, Anthropology, or a related field.
Alutiiq Language Fluency and linguistic knowledge.
WORK CONDITIONS:
Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, walking and occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Work environment includes various locations in office and other public buildings and use of computer, audio/visual and general office equipment.
