Job Description
As a Construction Inspector with Public Works, you’ll play a pivotal role in overseeing construction activities on critical infrastructure projects. Under general supervision, you’ll ensure compliance with contract specifications, plans, applicable codes, and safety regulations, all while contributing to successfully delivering impactful projects.
Skills
This position requires exceptional attention to detail, knowledge of construction processes, and excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with contractors and the public. As part of your role, you’ll engage in engineering inspections across a diverse range of construction activities, including but not limited to:
Renovations and improvements of roadways and buildings
Water supply and sewer collection pipelines
Tunneling/jacking, trackwork and improvements
Power distribution and transmission systems, electrical overhead contact systems
Signal, control, and data acquisition systems, radio and telecommunications networks (including fiber optics)
Power substations, vehicle modifications and retrofits, bridges, ADA retrofits, and facilities
Your duties as a Construction Inspector may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspecting and monitoring contractor work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules. Reporting safety hazards, traffic hazards, defective work, and debris to contractors for correction.
Preparing and maintaining project documentation, including daily reports, force accounts, change orders, materials testing, and other construction records.
Participating in planning, preconstruction, coordination, progress, scheduling, and field staff meetings.
Reviewing and analyzing plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, approval of change orders, constructability reviews, and contract closeout records.
Assisting in identifying and resolving disputes and responding to public complaints or concerns.
Ensuring all required tests, inspections, measurements, and operations are completed and documented for quality assurance/quality control compliance.
Verify and prepare quantity and progress estimates for contractor progress payments.
Conducting field measurements and maintaining as-built drawings.
Monitoring the excavation, loading, and off-hauling of hazardous materials from construction sites to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Operating a vehicle to travel to various inspection sites.
Nature of Work: This position requires sustained physical effort with considerable standing, bending, and occasionally heavy lifting; working in confined spaces; intermittent exposure to hazardous heights and poorly ventilated areas, streets, and roadways; and ability to be cleared for respirator fit testing and use. Additionally, work at correctional facilities may be required.
