JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION: This position works in the area of water construction, repair, maintenance, and installation of water systems. An employee in this position must possess a high level of independent motivation, exceptional judgment, and an ability to work outdoors in all types of weather condition. An employee in this position is required to be available for on-call rotation as well as emergencies within the Citys jurisdiction, scheduled to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Primary functions are directed through and supervised by the Utilities Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Hands-on installation, repair and maintenance of meters, controls, piping and related water and sewer system components and devices, works under direct supervision of a Lead Utilities Technician. Work includes digging, trenching and back filling excavations, truck driving, use of hand and power tools, using sewer cleaning and other equipment, and lifting in a safe and proficient manner.
- Work safely, diligently and responsibly on water systems.
- Handle customer complaints in a timely manner using skill, tact and good judgment to result in a desired conclusion. Communicate the complaint and the outcome to the appropriate management level, including the Utilities Supervisor.
- Complete written work orders timely, accurately, and legibly.
- Operation of construction equipment in the repair and maintenance of piping facilities and systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to comprehend and understand detailed plans and technical documents, manuals, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to water systems.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and follow directions in English sufficiently to successfully perform required job duties.
- Ability to perform assigned duties timely and effective manner while working carefully and complying with safety rules.
- Ability to follow directions and complete assignments accurately and on time, using tact and good judgment.
- Knowledge of water and sewer piping systems, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of performing operator maintenance on all department tools and equipment and in the correction of deficiencies.
- Knowledge of safety practices and participation in a departmental safety program.
- Knowledge of construction equipment and ability to use equipment in a safe and efficient manner,
- Ability and willingness to provide an acceptable level of customer service, interacting with the public with courtesy and efficiency. Interact effectively and respectfully with supervisors and co-workers.
- Actively support the Departments and the Citys goals, programs, objectives, and comply with the Citys regulations and procedures.
- Ability to maintain an acceptable work schedule and attendance record. Must be insurable by the Citys insurance carrier and maintain an acceptable driving record.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS:
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Use of both hands with majority of fingers in each hand. 20/40 vision (in at least one eye), and be able to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels in a typical governmental office (corrective devices acceptable). Occasional light lifting and/or carrying, bending, stooping, working, standing and pulling. Must be able to easily carry (50) lbs.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. At least six months experience in repair, maintenance and installation of water systems.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Valid Florida Drivers License; ability to obtain a Florida level 3 water distribution license within one year of employment is preferred. Other certifications: Ability to obtain Confined Space certification and Trenching and Shoring certification.
