Job Description
Vector Control Field Technician. The District is creating this new “quasi” permanent position to ensure technicians will be back the next spring. The District is proposing nine (9) months of full-time work and three (3) months during which the employee will be furloughed. During that period the employee can file for unemployment. The position is guaranteed/protected for employees that want to return on the next spring. Some benefits are also included. These positions will be based at the District facility in Vancouver, WA; however, work areas may change depending on need and be anywhere in Clark County. Experience in biological laboratory and/or field-work desirable. Basic computer skills required.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Field Work
- Conduct UAS (drone) operations for mosquito survey flight and pesticide applications within the guidelines of the Clark County Mosquito Control District’s C*ertificate of Authorization (COA) or operations under part 107 of the Federal Aviation R*egulations (FAR’s)
- Keep informed of trends and developments regarding UAS operations and applicable laws and regulations governing their use to maintain skill and expertise
- Handle, observe, and inspect immature and adult mosquitoes
- Collect surveillance data on immature mosquitoes and beneficial organisms that occur in flooded fields, catch basins or other similar habitats
- Using laptop/handheld computer devices to collect field information
- Help collecting data for research projects
- Conduct mosquito larviciding treatments using physical, biological and/or chemical control methods
- Conduct mosquito adulticiding treatments
- Enter data in our Mosquito ID software
- Help investigating service requests in a timely manner
- Be mindful of workplace safety and act responsibly with District property
Surveillance
- Identifying immature and adult mosquitoes using a microscope
- Trapping and collecting adult mosquitoes
- Using laboratory equipment and instruments
- Test mosquitoes for West Nile virus using RAMP technology
- Using laptop/handheld computer devices to collect field information
General
- Operate District provided vehicles, which may require the use of four-wheel drive trucks and ATVs’ and operate specialized spray equipment
- Establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and the public
- Correctly utilizing personal protective equipment
- Accurately interpreting paper and electronic maps
- Produce and/or collaborate on protocols and procedures for in-house research projects
- Collect and record field data
- Reconcile and interpret data
- Using laptop/handheld computer devices to collect field information
- Production of reports (results, graphs, etc.)
- Share/present results internally or with partners involved in the projects
- Oher specific job duties could be assigned to fit the needs of the District
Requirements – Qualifications
It is the applicants’ responsibility to identify in their application materials how they meet the MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS listed below:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older
- Education, training, and/or experience in vector control is preferred, but not required
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the Public Health Pest Control License within one (1) month of employment and maintain it in good standing
- Experience with U*nmanned Aerial Systems (UAS/drones) and Geographical Information S*ystems (GIS) are preferred
- Must obtain a Federal Aviation Association (FAA) part 107 certification as soon as possible and maintain it in good standing
- Experience performing biological assays preferred
- Experience identifying insects and use of a dichotomous identification manuals/keys preferred
- Can work with minimal direct supervision
- A valid Washington Driver License will be required at the time of employment or obtain such within 30 days of hire and must be maintained throughout employment
- A recent DMV printout is required before employment
Physical requirements
- Moderate physical activity is required on a regular basis including lifting, reaching for, pulling, and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds
- Sitting for long periods of time while driving a vehicle.
- Walking for long distances and climbing over and around natural obstacles.
- Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, and grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment.
- Excellent vision, both close and distance.
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
- Possess ability to climb ladders and fences
- Possess ability to wear a respirator
Work environment
- The work environment varies but normally is outdoor or in a vehicle but may include warehouses, office buildings, vehicles, wetlands, fields, etc.
- Regular exposure to all types of weather is required as the position is required to work outside, exposed to high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, and wind.
- Exposure to loud and moderate noise levels will occur on a regular basis when around a variety of other equipment, motors, etc.
- Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used, and disposed of according to labeling instructions, is required frequently.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes, and insects is required.
- Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Examination and selection process
- Applicants selected for interviews will be based on a qualifying evaluation of training, education, and experience. Those candidates selected for interviews will receive an oral interview to assess training,
experience, and ability to perform the duties of the position. Selection will be based on a combined overall assessment of the oral interview and the resume.
Terms of Employment
- $25.80 / hour

- Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Working hours are adjusted for weather, vector, and vector-borne disease activity, and/or other District needs. This position might require working early mornings and/or late nights to meet the needs of the
District's surveillance, research, and control programs. The employee may be required to work in excess of 40 hours/week and occasional weekends.
