POSITION SUMMARY
The Orange County Second Supervisorial District Office seeks an exceptional Deputy Chief of Staff to assist the Chief of Staff in managing office daily operations and policy analysis. This role involves supervising staff, coordinating with stakeholders, analyzing policies, and providing assistance on a wide range of complex issues. Our Office operates in a fast-paced environment with numerous high-priority tasks. The ideal candidate should be adept at handling multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, meeting deadlines, and fostering positive professional relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operational Management:  Assist the Chief of Staff with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office, including workflow coordination, staff management, office efficiency, and resource allocation. 
  • Staff Supervision:  Supervise, mentor, train, and coach staff. 
  • Policy Support: Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to develop and implement policy initiatives.  Oversee policy areas and provide recommendations.  
  • Project Management:  Lead or participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned.  Ensure project goals and deadlines are met. 
  • Event Coordination: Forecast staffing and resource needs to host and participate in successfully in events.  
  • Organization:  Our office participates in at least 75 events a year, responds to hundreds of constituents needs and concerns, and forges many policy initiatives.  This position requires someone who is adept at helping to organize and prioritize the work of a team.  The ability to meet tight deadlines while managing multiple priorities is key to the success of this position.  
  • Professional Relationships:  Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with elected officials, internal County staff, executives, non-profit leaders and community members.

  • Understand, interpret, and apply state and federal policy, laws and regulations applicable to areas of responsibility. 
  • Evaluate work processes and recommend and implement improvements. 
  • Present proposals and recommendations clearly, logically and persuasively in public meetings. 
  • Represent the County and Supervisor's office effectively on a variety of issues. 
  • Possess excellent communications skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Exercise sound, expert independent judgement and seasoned political acumen within general policy guidelines. 
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information. 
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with highly sensitive, complex and confidential issues and situations with broad effect on City policies and issues. 
  • Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with elected officials, all levels of City management, other governmental officials, business and community leaders, community agencies, employees, the public and others encountered in the course of work. 

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Commitment to Public Service:  A genuine passion for serving the public and contributing to meaningful change. 
  • Education:  Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience:  Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a policy, legislative, or governmental role, with supervisory or managerial experience.  
  • Skills:  Strong leadership and team management skills.  Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.  Proficiency in project management and organizational skills.  Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.  
  • Knowledge:  Understanding of local government operations, legislative processes, and public policy issues.  Familiarity with the political landscape and key stakeholders in the community. 
  • Attributes:  High level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to public service.  Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.  Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
BENEFITS
Salary is negotiable based on experience, ranging from $120,000 - $140,000.  Benefits include Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance, Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Vacation/Sick leave.
