Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking a Training Program Coordinator - Residential Programs. This role will lead training and development initiatives by coordinating, delivering, and/or supporting various training and development interventions dedicated to the development of residential employees, as well as ensuring compliance with in-service and advanced training standards and regulations. This position is critical in the agency's ability to hire, develop, and retain a highly proficient workforce by providing required training to current and future employees.

This agency is currently approved to work a hybrid telework schedule with four days in the office and one day of telework.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires considerable knowledge in developing and delivering training material for an adult audience, utilizing a variety of training interventions, preferably in a juvenile justice, law enforcement, and/or correctional environment.
  • Working knowledge of the juvenile justice system, safety and security, specialty topics related to adolescents, secure juvenile institutional operations, and regulations relating to direct care staff training.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow lesson plans; plan and coordinate training programs; to organize and schedule work; and coordinate the day-to-day needs of assigned programs/courses.
  • Intermediate to advanced level of technological literacy, with an emphasis on curriculum design and presentation software is required.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state to deliver training, to adhere to travel reimbursement guidelines, to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws, and adjust to the changing needs of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Must meet certification requirements for use of force (Handle With Care) instructor and Red Cross instructor, as well as, regularly demonstrate and perform the physical requirements.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of DJJ procedures and JCC operations.
  • Experience in training program design, development, and supervision.
  • Experience delivering formal classroom training and/or field-based/on-the-job training to an adult audience in a juvenile justice or criminal justice environment.
  • Certification as a Red Cross and/or Handle With Care instructor.
  • Experience working in juvenile justice, corrections, jail, law enforcement, criminal justice academy, and/or other closely related field.
