In this capacity, the incumbent is responsible for cashing and issuing checks; accepting deposits and payments on loans and bankcards; paying withdrawals from savings accounts and redeeming savings bonds. In addition, the teller supports the efficient operation of the branch by verifying and packaging currency and coin and by accurately balancing the teller window. The teller ensures that losses to the bank are minimized by keeping cash outages and cash differences low.
Along with providing high quality service to customers, the teller identifies sales opportunities. Here, the incumbent is responsible for keeping informed of current bank products and services, recognizing opportunities to make sales referrals, and taking the necessary steps to refer the sale to the appropriate branch personnel.
Providing accurate and responsive customer service while also making sales referrals for bank services is a major challenge to this position. The teller is responsible for maintaining the appropriate balance between processing customer transactions quickly and accurately while at the same time getting to know the customers, providing them with a high level of service, and making sales referrals for bank services. Included here are calculators, teller machines, currency counters, check writers, encoding machines, and computers. Depending on the branch, the teller should be familiar with the operation of this equipment.
