Position Summary
The Veteran and Military Support Center at Jackson Sate University is accepting applications for its Director position. The Director will oversee the University’s Veteran and Military Support Center.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education
Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education, Military Science or Counseling.

Minimum Required Experience
  • Five (5) years of experience directly related in Veteran Affairs or Administration, student recruitment and/or financial aid.
  • Experience working with college level students, veterans or dependents of veterans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of veteran aid and educational incentive programs and policies.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state statutes and regulations relating to financial assistance programs.
  • Experience working with college level students, veterans or dependents of veterans.
  • Maintain office files in an accurate and efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of current practices and theories in student affairs in higher education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with both faculty and student populations.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written required.
  • Good organizational and administrative skills.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills.
  • Group presentation and training skills necessary to facilitate training.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Directs and oversees the University’s Veteran and Military Support Center.
  • Interview Veterans and/or dependents.
  • Advise them on services in which they may be eligible for through the US Department of Veterans Affairs or certain other military-related governmental agencies.
  • Coordinates recruitment and retention activities by meeting with prospective students and family members on and off campus; communicating personally to inquiries and applicants by phone, mail, and/or e-mail.
  • Works and maintains a collaborative cooperation with representatives of the Office of Veteran Affairs in the recruitment of veterans from the military services to the University.
  • Refer Veterans to agencies that can assist them with matriculation through the University such as Admissions, Financial Aid, Counseling Center, Financial Services, and Community Services.
  • Applies for grants to further develop and facilitate the goals of the Veteran and Military Support Center.
  • Work with the office of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Recruitment in marketing to veteran at college fairs, transition centers, and local and state veteran organizations.
  • Make sure all paperwork is submitted in a timely manner to meet specific deadlines so that claims do not expire.
  • Perform all duties in a manner acceptable to the Mississippi Department of Veterans Affairs.
