PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Youth Development Specialist is responsible for planning and implementing engaging programs for K-8 students as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant-funded afterschool program. This role supports youth development outcomes in Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. The position offers flexibility in hours, typically between 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Youth Development and Engagement
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes safety, respect, and positive engagement among all program participants.
- Develop and lead a variety of activities, including academic support, arts, sports, STEM, and social-emotional learning opportunities.
- Serve as a mentor and positive role model, encouraging personal growth and positive decision-making in youth.
- Motivate and guide members to participate in programs and take on leadership opportunities.
Program Planning and Implementation
5. Collaborate with program staff to plan, organize, and implement high-quality activities aligned with 21st CCLC goals.
6. Adapt programs to meet the needs and interests of youth, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all participants.
7. Monitor and assess program effectiveness, making recommendations for improvement to meet grant performance metrics.
Safety and Supervision
8. Ensure the safety of all participants by monitoring activities, managing behavior, and addressing concerns promptly.
9. Maintain program spaces, equipment, and materials to ensure a clean, organized, and safe environment.
Collaboration
10. Build strong relationships with youth and staff to foster a positive and supportive program culture.
11. Participate in team meetings and collaborate with staff to ensure consistency in program delivery and alignment with organizational goals.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in staff training, professional development, and team meetings to ensure alignment with program goals.
- Support occasional special events or weekend activities as needed.
RELATIONSHIPS:
- Internal: Collaborate with program staff, club members, and supervisors to deliver effective programs and align with grant requirements.
- External: Minimal parental contact, with primary interactions focused on program delivery and collaboration with schools or community partners as needed.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Passion for youth development and a commitment to helping students succeed.
- Experience in youth programs, education, or related fields preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with and inspire youth.
- Ability to manage group dynamics and implement positive behavior strategies.
- CPR and First Aid certifications (training provided if not certified).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must pass a background check prior to employment.
- Availability primarily between 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility based on program needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Active engagement with youth, including standing, bending, and moving throughout the program area.
- May involve lifting or setting up equipment and materials as needed.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 per week
