Job Title: Lifeguard
FLSA Status: non-exempt Wage: $11.50-$14/hr or doe

POSITION SUMMARY: The lifeguard is responsible for maintaining order in the pool area at all times. Primary responsibility is to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard. Assures safety of all pool participants, both members and non-members as well as all job duties of a swim instructor. Must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit community service organization. Works with limited supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Ensures a safe environment for all members and non-members using any part of the aquatic facility.
· Takes pool attendance assuring the 1:25 ratio is being met and maintains related records, as required.
· When off stand assures the deck and guard area is well maintained and free of clutter.
· Cleans and maintains the pool area, office, guardroom, deck and surrounding areas.
· Assists Lead Staff and Director in maintaining chemical balance, cleanliness and documentation of chemical use.
· Knows and enforces all rules of sanitation and care of the pool as required by State Law and the YMCA.
· Recommends disciplinary measures of disorderly individuals; prepares incident report and if necessary refers the to the Director.
· Identifies potential hazards around the pool area that may be dangerous and corrects them or reports to the Director.
· Understands Aquatic Center Emergency Action Plan as evidenced by signature of Instructions and Training Manual familiarization for the file.
· Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe behaviors or areas.
· Scans pool at all times and maintains safety standards by standing on deck, patrolling, or sitting in an elevated lifeguard chair.
· Moves position, as necessary, to have full view of the assigned zone, both above and below the water surface, including the bottom of the pool. When more than one guard is on duty, they shall be stationed in different positions for best coverage of the area and shall rotate their viewing position every thirty minutes.
· Attends monthly In-Service Trainings, and staff meetings with the Program Director and other management team members as requested, as well as any trainings required by the YMCA.
· Know and enforces emergency procedures and safety regulations in order to ensure participant safety.
· Communicates with other Lifeguards, Instructors, and Management on any potential concerns related to the operation of the pool and Aquatics programs.
· Provides assistance to participants, providing information on rules and programs in a helpful and positive manner.
· Adheres to Aquatics Department employee performance expectations. See Attached.
· Adheres to the Mission of the YMCA at all times and implements the Character Development traits of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into the swim lessons program.
· Attends required YMCA trainings.
· Exemplify the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility when interacting with members, non-members, and other staff members.
· Completes required child sexual abuse prevention training, comply with legal and ethical obligation as a mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse and cooperate fully with any investigation of such abuse
· Smile and make connections with members and non-members
· Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum age is 15 years old
Required – Certification in CPR, First Aid and Lifeguarding, can be obtained at the Y
Preferred – Lifeguarding experience, and swim instruction experience or willingness to be trained
Preferred – Experience with children or willingness to be trained

· Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 75 pounds in weight and Adults of various sizes in need of care.
· Occasionally must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
· Frequently may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
