Responsibilities of the Library Assistant I include:
- Ability to use library and computer software to perform account maintenance; check in/out library material; assist with maintaining various reports and/or records; troubleshoot computers; and copy, transcribe, enter and post data or information. Ability to renew, request, receive and inspect library materials; shelving; and sorting. Ability to assist with online resources; tablets and mobile devices; reader’s advisory; and use of other library materials and equipment. Ability to operate, perform weekly maintenance, and troubleshoot Automated Material Handling (AMH) equipment. Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.
Other duties as assigned may include: Ability to work at any public service desk (Circulation, Adult Services, or Youth and Family Services); register new users; handle room reservations; handle various forms of tender and cash registers; point of sale machines; reconciling money; and process fees, fines, sales, and donations.
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience in public libraries or customer service-related industry or volunteerism equivalent to 6 months’ part-time work experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFITCATIONS:
Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
An acceptable criminal history and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports are required for adults 18 years of age and older.
An in-basket exercise may be administered to the candidates selected for an interview.
The selected candidate may be transferred to work at another area library, if and when a need arises.
