What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEMP LIFEGUARD I position at City of Helena, MT?

Age Requirement:
Must be fifteen years old or older

DEFINITION
Performs public safety and instructional work in supervising swimmers and enforcing regulations at the municipal swimming pool. Also performs routine custodial work in the operation and maintenance of the bathhouse and surrounding areas.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervised by Patrol Leaders, Assistant Aquatics Director, and Recreation and Aquatics Program Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises supervision over waterpark patrons as to the safe use of the facility.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Patrols waterpark and enforces safety regulations.
Assists swimmers from water when in difficulty.
Applies CPR and administers first aid treatments, when needed.
Answer patron questions about rules and regulations, hours of operations, and prices while on break.
Helps patrons with locating lost articles or persons.
Completes accident, incident, and discipline reports.
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and waxes floors; washes windows and walls.
Cleans and disinfects dressing rooms, showers, pool deck, and restrooms; replenishes supplies.
Cleans and polishes chrome, brass, and mirrors; cleans and clears drains on lavatories and toilets.
Vacuums and skim pools.
Cleans and disinfects after accidents.
Organizes cleaning closet, guard room, and other areas of the waterpark.
Installs and removes swimming pool mats.
Informs assistant aquatics director when cleaning and first aid supplies is low.
Informs assistant aquatics director of concerns regarding patrons, equipment, waterpark fixtures, bathhouse, or other concerning issues.
Participates during staff meetings and in-service trainings, including squad practice.
Acts as a mentor to the lifeguard I staff, as needed.
Leads squad practice when patrol leader is absent, as designated.
Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Perform other duties as assigned.

SAFETY RELATED DUTIES:
Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job assignments and occupations.
Report occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses immediately to their supervisor. Follow supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as requested by the supervisor.
Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee.
Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Working knowledge of water safety principles
Thorough knowledge of and ability to administer resuscitation (CPR) and first aid treatments
Appropriate behaviors of how to act around the public
Importance of being attentive, respectful, and responsible

Skill to:
Perform appropriate rescue saves and/or first aid (including CPR/AED, obstructed airway, BVM) either in or out of the water
Help victims of stroke, seizures, diabetic emergency, and other sudden illnesses
Swim modified front crawl stroke and breast stroke

Ability to:
Make quick decisions in an emergency situation, while remaining calm
Enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact
Work well with children and other patrons while maintaining control of assigned zone
Work with others with differing personalities and beliefs
Be attentive, respectful, and responsible
Physical Demands
Retrieve a submerged, passive victim of any size
Able to perform escapes with victims of all size and strength
Capable of swimming 1000 meters per week
Able to sit and stand for an entire work day with little breaks
Able to lift 75 lbs.
Able to perform custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, and other related duties
Able to cover and uncover pool by using pool mats

Work Environment
Outside patrolling waterpark area, swimming pool in both hot and cold weather. Some indoor work required.

Experience and Training:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Experience/Training:

One or more years of lifeguarding experience or equivalent

  • License or Certificate:

Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification must be completed within two weeks of hire (training/certification will be provided by the City
