Full-time position available with the Parks & Recreation Department, Community Services Division located at Southeast Community Center, 4201 East 63rd Street
Salary Range: $5,173-$7,759/month
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. *May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on program and facility needs.

Responsibilities

  • Handles overall management, administration, and operation of a community recreation center.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of recreation programs, events, and facility operations to meet community needs.
  • Emphasizes financial oversight, community partnerships, customer service excellence, and revenue retention strategies to maximize the center’s impact.
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates recreation programs, events, and facility operations to ensure a diverse range of offerings that serve the community effectively.
  • Ensures the facility is well-maintained, safe, and welcoming for all patrons.
  • Oversees hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluation of staff and trains staff in customer service excellence and develops retention strategies to enhance membership participation, program engagement, and overall community satisfaction.
  • Develops and implements staff training programs to enhance skills, maintain certifications, and ensure a high-performing team.
  • Provides leadership and mentorship to foster professional growth.
  • Builds and fosters relationships with local businesses, schools, nonprofits, and organizations to enhance programming, sponsorships, and outreach.
  • Serves as a liaison with community groups to align programming with local needs and priorities.
  • Develops collaborative initiatives, joint-use agreements, cooperative programming with external stakeholders, and implements best practices for customer engagement, ensuring a positive, inclusive, and high-quality experience for patrons.
  • Manages program budgets, projects revenue and expenditures, and ensures efficient financial operations.
  • Oversees daily cash handling procedures, transaction monitoring, and sales tracking to ensure compliance with fiscal policies.
  • Develops revenue growth strategies through program promotion, sponsorships, and effective customer engagement.
  • Reviews and approves promotional materials, including course descriptions, program brochures, newsletters, and announcements.
  • Utilizes social media and other platforms to maximize participation and awareness and works with staff to execute marketing strategies that drive engagement.
  • Coordinates and oversees facility rentals, including providing tours, managing rental agreements, and ensuring proper event execution.
  • Maintains rental logistics to optimize usage while ensuring compliance with policies and renter satisfaction.
  • Conducts routine inspections, submits maintenance requests, and ensures timely repairs to maintain safety standards.
  • Manages registration systems, accounting processes, and proper documentation for financial transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with department policies, city regulations, local, state, and federal regulations governing recreation programs and facility operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, public administration or other area of specialization and 2 years professional experience of a progressively responsible nature in organized recreation activities, including 1 year at the level of Senior Recreation Director; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience. Must pass a preemployment drug screen as prescribed by the City. Preference given to those with one of the following: experience in municipal recreation program management, knowledge of recreation software such as CivicRec or similar, certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or obtains within a designated timeframe), certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) designation, experience in financial management, sales retention strategies, and cash handling or background in developing community partnerships and collaborative initiatives.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
