AccessABLE Recreation. Program Specialist
20 hours per week
Park and Recreation Department
Limited Term Appointment
This is a limited-term position anticipated for one year from the date of hire, and is contingent upon the availability of allocated funds, as well as favorable performance by the incumbent.

Nature of Work
The AccessABLE Recreation Program Specialist leads recreational activities enriching the social development and experience of individuals with diverse cognitive abilities. This is a limited term position that supports children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Duties include co-leading program activities, engaging with participants, assisting individuals with personal cares as necessary, and ensuring participants’ safety.
This particular role will support our After School and Summer Rec programs serving students with diverse cognitive abilities.

Education and Experience
High School Diploma and 6 months of experience working with individuals with disabilities.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represents the physical and environmental demands for this position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:

- School Year: Monday-10:30-5:30, Tuesday-Friday 2:30-5:45pm
- Summer: Monday-Thursday, shifts will be available between 9:00am-4:30pm, depending on events, but you will still only work 20 hours per week
Duties And ResponsibilitiesPerforms other duties as assigned.
- Facilitates AccessABLE Recreation Programs and delivers engaging and safe recreation programs.
- Facilitate recreational programs.
- Interact with program participants to promote a safe and enjoyable recreation program.
- Promote positive social skills, independence, and physical activity for participants.
- Engage with participants to exercise, play games, and complete projects.
- Work within a team to provide support to each other and to participants.
- Adhere to safety practices involving staff and participants.
- Follow prescribed record keeping procedures, including incidents.
- Maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other staff, participants’ families, and community members via professional and courteous communication, information sharing, providing feedback, and problem solving as needed.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Education and Experience
High School Diploma and 6 months of experience working with individuals with disabilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Special Education, Human Services, or a related field.
- Experience with recreation programming.
- Experience working in a similar role or with people from diverse communities.
