Council on Foreign Relations
New York, NY Other
POSTED ON 8/1/2024 CLOSED ON 1/22/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director, National Program and Outreach position at Council on Foreign Relations?

Overview

CFR Outreach works to raise the profile of the organization and develop relationships with communities across the United States. Current initiatives focus on state and local officials; local journalists; college and university educators, administrators, and students; and congregational leaders and representatives of faith-based organizations. This position will be the first hire to build out an Outreach initiative geared toward the technology industry and issues at the nexus of tech and foreign policy.

The assistant director will work closely with the National Program and CFR’s Cross-Cutting Initiatives on China, Technology, Climate, and RealEcon to cultivate relations with the technology community and develop programming of technology-related events, under the direction of the National Program and Outreach Vice President and Associate Director. The goal is to provide a forum for technologists and policymakers to discuss the role of the United States in developing and regulating technology as well as technology’s effects on geopolitics and international affairs. Special attention will be paid to the ramifications of emerging technologies, such as AI, for government, the educational community, local journalists, and the general public, on geoeconomic policies, and on the U.S. relationship with key trading partners.

The position will be based either in New York with frequent travel, particularly to the West Coast; or in the Bay Area with periodic travel to New York.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Contributing and collaborating on managing a Technology and Foreign Policy Outreach initiative at CFR and building on the National Program’s current Tech and Foreign Policy Series on the West Coast.
  • Supporting the China, Technology, Climate, and RealEcon Cross-Cutting Initiatives at CFR.
  • Developing the Young Professionals Series for Technologists on the West Coast and across the country in conjunction with the National Program.
  • Audience development: identifying new and diverse voices in tech across the United States—often through collaboration across CFR, including with Meetings and Membership, Corporate, and the National and Outreach department—to grow and connect this new Outreach community.
  • Planning and logistics for in-person and virtual programming featuring issues at the nexus of technology and foreign policy, including webinars, briefings, roundtables, and other gatherings in New York; Washington, DC; and across the country. Tasks include generating speaker and topic ideas, scheduling and implementation of events, drafting and managing correspondence, preparing meeting materials, and writing reports.
  • Communications and resource dissemination efforts, including maintaining Outreach webpages, email campaigns, placing ads for conferences, and managing social media feeds. Upkeep of CRM database.
  • Tracking metrics and conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis across program offerings for reporting purposes and as a basis for strategic decisions.
  • Supporting other team members and department-wide projects and programming as needed. Serving as departmental liaison for organization-wide projects.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience working in or with the tech industry, particularly on the West Coast and in C-suite engagement on audience and market development, partnerships, international relations, government, or community engagement. Event or program management experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with an ability to multitask and meet deadlines. Keen attention to detail, demonstrable experience in organizing complex events with highly scheduled principals.
  • Enthusiastic team player with a positive and flexible attitude who can work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
  • Strong verbal and written skills; ability to communicate effectively with multiple audiences, from the C-suite to the IT department.
  • Strong skills in basic office technology, data analysis, social media, and content management skills.
  • MA in a relevant field preferred, with demonstrable interest in foreign policy and international affairs issues.
