Job Duties

Applicants hired into this position who are not currently employees of the state are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement. Transferring employees (those who are currently employees of the state) are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with the signature of a 12-month agreement at 10 months.

The Virginia State Police is seeking to hire an Administrative Procedures Specialist (ASP) at State Police Headquarters in Chesterfield County, Virginia. This position is the public face of Virginia State Police at every gun show across the Commonwealth. As an ASP, you will be trained in all state and federal laws regarding the purchase, possession, and transportation of firearms. This will include running background checks through various Virginia State Police and FBI databases. The position requires someone who is meticulous, has a very high attention to detail and is willing to travel.

  • Conducts background checks prior to the purchase of a firearm in the Firearms Transaction Center while physically present at Gun Show event locations.
  • Analyzes criminal records and other documents to determine if there are prohibiting factors that prevent potential gun buyers or other recipients of firearms from lawfully purchasing or possessing firearms.
  • Provides instructional and operational assistance to users of the V-Check system.
  • Maintains and reports statistical information relating to area of responsibility.
  • Maintains Gun Show Calendar of Events.
  • Testifies in court.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Excel, Exchange/Outlook and basic computer operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, speak and write English.
  • Ability to access, retrieve, and interpret state and federal automated records.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply research and analytical methodology in the interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information.
  • Ability to travel, occasionally overnight.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience required to perform assigned duties may be substituted for education.
  • Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either United States (U.S.) citizenship or having been a lawful resident of the U.S. for the past 10 consecutive years.
  • Valid Virginia operator’s license required or ability to obtain prior to hiring.
  • Good driving record required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of state and federal criminal history databases VCIN and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred.
  • VCIN certification will be preferred.
  • Direct experience associated with VCIN/NCIC preferred.
  • College degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in retrieval and interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information preferred.
