What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician position at DULUTH TRANSIT AUTHORITY?

The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) is currently seeking to fill a full-time, union mechanic position. The DTA is an award-winning transit agency that provides safe, convenient, and affordable public transit service (fixed route and paratransit) within the Twin Ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI and its surrounding areas. We transport just under 3 million passengers annually by way of our 75 bus fleet and we employ approximately 180 team members.

 

The Maintenance Technician assists in the mechanical maintenance on DTA transit buses, support vehicles and operating facilities. In addition, you will provide less technical maintenance functions as needed by the Maintenance Department. The main responsibility is to provide assistance to Senior Technicians, performing general repetitious maintenance functions, assisting in the preventative maintenance program, using the necessary tools and equipment in a competent manner, performing jobs in a safe manner, completing records and documenting tasks completed and assisting with the overall maintenance of the DTA building and grounds. This position is full-time, with excellent wage and benefit packages. Candidates need to be at least 21 years of age with ASE Certifications, preferably in heavy truck or transit buses. Previous work experience or training will be considered in lieu of ASE certifications.  This is a Monday-Friday positions, with occasional rotating Saturday or Sunday as needed.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform the mechanical maintenance of DTA vehicles and equipment. Repairs malfunctioning parts and systems of DTA transit buses and other equipment in a complete, timely and quality manner as instructed. Consults and interprets repair manuals and diagrams.
  • Performs preventative maintenance functions as instructed.
  • Performs general repetitious maintenance duties and tasks as assigned.
  • Uses all tools, machinery and other equipment for the performance of maintenance tasks in a competent and safe manner.
  • Completes all documentation of work performed in accordance with current DTA requirements.
  • Performs all job functions in accordance with DTA safety regulations. Utilizes all required safety equipment.
  • Operates DTA transit and support vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Performs other maintenance-related duties as required.

 

The performance of the major job functions for this position requires the incumbent to be present at their work setting. Regular, dependable attendance is necessary for the performance of the job duties. The Duluth Transit Authority reserves the right to assign additional or different duties to employees within this job classification consistent with the changing needs of the Duluth Transit Authority. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Necessary technical skills gained through formal education, technical training, work experience or combination that is necessary to perform required tasks.
  • Responsible for furnishing all required standard tools. Specialty and transit-specific tools provided.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to operate required machinery and equipment necessary.
  • Must be willing to get a Class B CDL driver's license. Training is provided.
  • Must pass the DTA DOT (Department of Transportation) physical examination.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer and other maintenance related machinery.
  • Must be able to lift 100lbs to waist level, carry 50lbs, utilize tools, reach, stoop, crawl, bend, kneel, lay on the floor, climb ladders and stairs, push equipment and turn knobs, screws and bolts.
