Job Title: General Superintendent – Commercial Construction
Reports To: Director of Construction
Job Summary:
The General Superintendent oversees all commercial construction projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This position requires a seasoned leader who can manage multiple projects, guide on-site teams, and collaborate with stakeholders, subcontractors, and clients to drive project success. The General Superintendent serves as the primary field representative for the organization and provides leadership, direction, and support to ensure seamless execution of all construction activities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Project Leadership:
- Oversee all commercial construction projects, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, schedules, and company standards.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for project-related field operations, addressing issues and implementing solutions promptly.
- Mentor, coach, and support project teams, including superintendents and field staff, fostering a collaborative and performance-driven culture.
2. Project Planning and Execution:
- Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, coordinating closely with project managers and subcontractors.
- Ensure timely mobilization and demobilization of resources, materials, and equipment.
- Monitor and enforce adherence to construction budgets and timelines.
3. Safety and Compliance:
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.
- Conduct regular safety meetings, audits, and inspections to identify and address risks proactively.
- Ensure all projects comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
4. Quality Control:
- Conduct regular site inspections to ensure construction quality meets or exceeds company and client expectations.
- Address quality issues promptly, implementing corrective actions when necessary.
5. Stakeholder Communication:
- Serve as the liaison between field operations and the Director of Construction, providing regular updates on project status, challenges, and opportunities.
- Maintain positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
- Facilitate regular project meetings to ensure alignment among all parties.
6. Resource Management:
- Manage and coordinate labor resources, subcontractors, equipment, and materials across multiple projects.
- Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of equipment and tools.
- Approve work schedules, timecards, and project deliverables for field teams.
7. Problem Solving and Risk Mitigation:
- Identify potential project risks and develop proactive strategies to mitigate them.
- Resolve conflicts and disputes efficiently while maintaining a focus on project objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent work experience.
- 10 years of experience in commercial construction.
- Extensive experience managing large-scale, multi-project portfolios in commercial construction (e.g., retail, office, healthcare, or industrial).
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction methods, materials, and best practices.
- Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore, Foundation) and scheduling tools (e.g., Microsoft Project).
- Strong leadership and team-building skills with the ability to mentor and motivate teams.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
