The Director will oversee Oakleigh’s daily operations, maintenance, and collections care.
Working cooperatively with current staff and volunteers, they will perform a wide variety of duties for Historic Mobile Preservation Society (HMPS) and Oakleigh House Museum to fulfill the organization's mission. This is included but not limited to museum operations, customer service, and behind-the-scenes operations. They will serve as the public face of HMPS and Oakleigh, and maintain the organization’s daily operations.
They will also be responsible for HMPS records and ensuring the accountant has the paperwork needed to for bookkeeping. The Director also maintains membership relationships and roster.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Administration
- Oversee daily staffing and schedules, including museum staff, volunteers, security guards, and interns
- Monitor and Maintain all open HMPS and Oakleigh emails and phone lines to ensure fast and easy communication - and forward such to the correct recipient within the organization
- Train new docents and volunteer guides/prepare training manuals
- Oversee and report daily sales, admission, and membership payments
- Maintain our membership information through HMPS’s membership software, membership renewal notices, and updating membership benefits as needed
- Oversee maintenance and perform needed maintenance as needed to include: housekeeping (for Oakleigh, the Union Barracks, the Cox-Deasy Cottage, and the archives), working with the City of Mobile and the Board of Directors for Oakleigh repairs, and working with the City Parks Department and City Arborist to maintain the grounds
- Maintain records of all Oakleigh and HMPS maintenance, as needed
- Manage group tour scheduling
- Manage, maintain, expand, and improve the Oakleigh Gift Shop
- Purchase supplies needed for Oakleigh and HMPS operations to Oakleigh and ensure information of purchases is properly documented for HMPS accountant, as needed
- Design and maintain museum spaces (not included in the formal tour)
- Oversee any improvements of museum spaces included in formal tour
- Keep the HMPS board appraised to the ongoing issues that arise with Oakleigh or HMPS
- Deposit cash and checks received for HMPS memberships, Daily Tours, Gift Shop sales, and Special Events in a timely manner
- Maintain an updated and accurate count of Oakleigh tourists and Gift Shop sales
- Responsible for maintaining active communication with the accountant, making sure all invoices are accurate and sent to accountant for payment, preparing and making deposits and sending that information to the accountant, preparing financial information for the Board, preparing financial information to support invoices to the City and submitting those invoices
- Maintain and update insurance for HMPS property and insurance required by the City
Collections and Interpretation
- Oversee planning of exhibits for temporary exhibit spaces
- Oversee updating changes in collection, as well as inventory in Past Perfect, including loans, acquisitions, de-accession, and temporary loans
- Ensure reporting and logging of any preventative conservation issues, as well as damage, immediately
- Develop alongside museum staff a Wish List of items for collection or office hardware
- Report needs for professional cleaning or repair to HMPS Board
- Make suggestions on improving appearance of exterior, interior, grounds, as needed. Work with museum staff and board to implement these changes
- Oversee changes updates to tour script, including specialty tours such as Oakleigh’s Masterpieces and Mimosas
Education Outreach
- Build and maintain relationships with local schools and home school groups
- Book and give tours of Oakleigh to school groups, as well as other large group tours
- Assist HMPS staff and board with scheduling and execution of educational lecturers for after-hours talks about local history and other related topics
Events
- Oversee planning and execution of annual events such as Oakleigh Lawn Parties, the Historic Mobile Homes Tour, Oakleigh in Mourning, and Christmas at Oakleigh
- Provide Customer Service and collect money at HMPS lectures and special events, as needed
- Oversee planning and execution of recurring events such as Yoga on Lawn and the Oakleigh Book Club
- Oversee planning and execution of specialty events such as Bourbon and Barbeque
- Manage HMPS and Oakleigh calendar of events, and ensure the information is spread to partners and other organizations
- Propose new HMPS events for Board consideration
Liaison Duties
- Coordinate with Visit Mobile for tourism partnership meetings and Ambassador Programs
- Serve as Oakleigh’s representative during tourism activities and workshops
- Serve as the public face of Oakleigh and HMPS through customer service at the museum and special events
Marketing/Public Relations
- Assist the Board of Directors, museum staff, and any HMPS consultants to create and execute a marketing plan
- Develop Group Tour marketing plan, within region and outside of region, e.g community organizations, Historic Districts, Garden Societies, Midtown Movement, conventions, cruise ship, retirement centers, large groups, Alabama Welcome Centers, hotels, restaurants, tourist gift shops
- Maintain updates of HMPS website and social media
- Manage calendar of events and ensure the information is spread to our partners, tourism partners, and other local calendars
- Monitor the media for mentions of HMPS or Oakleigh
Memberships
- Maintain and regularly update membership database(s)
- Send renewal notices to members with expiring memberships
- Work alongside the HMPS to change, maintain, and adapt membership benefits
- Maintain contact with HMPS members through opened availability, email, and publications such as the Landmark Letter
- Issue membership information and ID cards to all HMPS members
- Create and execute a membership recruitment plan
Volunteer Coordination
- Oversee and maintain current volunteers
- Expand volunteerism through active recruitment
- Train new volunteers, both as docents and for special events

Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in History, Business Management, or closely related field from recognized college or university.
- Preferred Master’s Degree in Administration, History or closely related field
- Preferred Experience working in non-profit, museum, or historic preservation setting.
- Knowledge of museum, archives, and historic preservation’s role in cultural and educational life of community preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Preferred knowledge of operational management of a museum or similar institution.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with various entities and handle relationships both internally and externally.
- Ability to facilitate, coach, and develop employees, volunteers, and interns and provide consistent feedback to help grow and develop internal talent.
- Skilled in cooperating with, leading, and directing diverse groups of individuals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly public speaking.
- Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to oversee and manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously.
- Strong ethical standard are a must.
- Strong candidates will be a self-starter.
