Job Description: The Clinical Genomics Variant Scientist supports the Clinical Genomics Center of Intermountain Precision Genomics (IPG) by leveraging cutting-edge laboratory and bioinformatics processes to help provide next generation care guidance for precision medicine initiatives. The Variant Scientist works closely with the scientific and clinical production team to develop and improve clinical processes. This position assists in individual cases to verify results and aids in the review of complex cases. Scope This position reports to the Clinical Genomics Core Laboratory Manager with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Precision Genomics Senior Scientific Program Director. The scope of the position includes analytical talent, hands-on ability within the core laboratories. The Variant Scientist ensures all variant science or curation in the clinical labs of Precision Genomics enhances all clinical settings. Job Essentials 1. Performs variant and gene assessments including researching the significance of variants, evaluating the evidence for gene-disease associations, and performing data review. 2. Supports clinical test sign out through variant review, curation, and quality control. 3. Troubleshoots complex cases. Supports the clinical production laboratory by serving as clinical processes subject matter expert. 4. Helps guide the bioinformatics team to build clinically relevant and biologically informed systems and processes. Develops and recommends procedures and policies to ensure success. Recommends revisions and change strategies as needed. 5. Designs and conducts analysis of prospective and retrospective clinical studies leveraging large, diverse patient databases. Disseminates information about studies to appropriate stakeholders. Makes decisions and recommendations that impact scientific activities. 6. Aids in the development of next generation data analysis and machine learning tools to improve data processing and automate clinical decision making. 7. Communicates clearly with a wide variety of stakeholders including genetic counselors, physicians, lab staff and IT staff. Minimum Qualifications PhD in Human Genetics or related field. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified. Two years of post-doctoral experience in interpreting clinical sequence variants and using tools such as UCSC genome browser, cBioPortal, IGViewer, etc. - and - Knowledge of commonly used oncology/genomics databases (e.g., dbSNP, COSMIC, ExAC, 1000 Genomes). - and - Basic understanding of bioinformatics and clinical NGS processes (oncology preferred). - and - Experience using statistics and data analysis. - and - Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience communicating across all levels of the organization (e.g., frontline staff, management, physicians). - and - Strong organizational and analytical skills. Preferred Qualifications Five years of Clinical Genomics Core Laboratory experience. - and - Experience with genomics including next-generation sequencing technology and applications and general concepts of bioinformatics data analysis. - and - Experience implementing bioinformatics methods including scripting and programming.
