Position Overview
This position with the Department of Corrections is responsible for professional accounting work in our Accounting and Compliance Unit. In this role, the Accountant Advanced will work with several Agency units as it pertains to contract establishment, budget preparation, fiscal reconciliations, and procurement. The ideal candidate will be able to organize daily work while meeting periodic deadlines and can effectively communicate reporting needs to other staff. Essential Functions
- Independently performs professional accounting work in establishing and maintaining complex budgetary reports, ledgers and statements financial records/ledgers for departmental use and/or submission to Office of Management and Budget (OMB), using standard automated and manual systems for assigned programs.
- Prepares complex internal statements and reports using various automated systems, which produce financial data used for planning, evaluating and forecasting
- Prepares, inputs and monitors information relating to Statewide Accounting System (SAP) and Remedy.
- Evaluates and assists in coordinating financial reporting of accounting, contract modifications and fund transfers to ensure compliance with federal regulations and applicable policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college, with courses in business administration and accounting.
- Requires two (2) years of professional experience in accounting, external auditing, budgetary planning and control or public accounting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience performing accounting functions related to general ledgers, budget forecasting and reconciliation.
Prefers at least two (2) years of experience utilizing automated financial systems.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience handling contract establishment and monitoring.
Prefers at least one (1) year of experience with BidBuy or other procurement software.
Prefers a Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Business Management or Economics.
Condition of Employment
- This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
