Communication Officer

General definition: Answers incoming emergency and administrative calls for police, fire, and EMS; processes and updates calls for service in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; dispatches calls to emergency responders and accurately manages unit locations. This position is responsible for receiving, processing, and disseminating information in an accurate and timely manner to provide an expeditious response to emergency situations; and enters, retrieves, and confirms records using the National and Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems.

Supervision received: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Shift Sergeant and/or Training Officer and under the general direction of the Communication Lieutenant, Chief Deputy and Sheriff.

Example of duties:

· Answer a multi-line phone system for both emergency and administrative calls.

· Receives complaints from public concerning crimes and police/fire/medical emergencies

· Operate a multi-channel radio system to receive and transmit pertinent information on calls for service to responding units; maintains the location and status of all units.

· Operate Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to input, retrieve, and store calls for service data.

· Utilize State and National databases (NCIC/TCIC) to input and retrieve confidential information such as warrants, missing person, protective orders, stolen vehicles, and property.

· Conducts computerized searches through local, state, and national databases.

· Testify in court when required

· Required to report to work punctually, work 12-hour shifts, including weekends, holidays, and on call status.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

· Ability to think clearly and effectively in 9-1-1 emergency situations

· Ability to listen and communicate effectively

· Ability to work a multi-tasking environment with constantly changing priories

· Ability to obtain information from distraught and irate callers

· Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications and licensing

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with general public, supervisor, and co-workers.

· Ability to handle stress, remain calm and function under circumstances that present life-threatening situations

· Ability to interpret a map and give directions

· Ability to effectively represent the Sheriff’s Office in contact with the public and other law enforcement agencies

· Ability to listen/comprehend and articulate over radio transmitters

Requirements: Will be issued a temporary Telecommunicators License by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement which is active for 1 year. The officer must be able to obtain a Permanent Telecommunicators License issued by the Texas commission on Law Enforcement for continued employment. Must receive and maintain certifications for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, National and Texas Crime Information Center (NCIC/TCIC), and Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS). Applicant must pass pre-employment testing, background check, drug, physical, and psychological testing.

Certificates and licenses required:
High school diploma or GED Valid Texas Driver’s license with an insurable driving record
