Job Title: PLTW Industrial Education

Department: Instruction

Reports to: Building Principal

Classification: Certified / Exempt


Summary

To develop in each pupil an insight and understanding of industry and its place in our society; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the technical fields; to develop practical problem-solving skills related to the materials and processes of industry; to develop in each pupil skill in the safe use of tools and machines. To also utilize PLTW resources in the daily implementation of rigorous, engaging labs and activities that involve designing and modeling of robotics/automation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Teaches skills and knowledge in one or more courses in drafting, metals, machine shop, woodworking, or general shop to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities via Project Lead the Way (PLTW).
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and organizes class time so that preparation, instruction, shop work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within the allotted time. Various lessons available through PLTW training and online resources.
  • Demonstrates industrial materials, equipment, tools and processes, using standard or teach-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aides.
  • Guides pupils in selection of appropriate elective projects or experiments.
  • Maintains an auditable record of student attendance and makes daily reports of students absent each period. Assigns citizenship and scholarship marks.
  • Instructs pupils in use of eye protection and safety guards, and in the use, care, and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to tools and equipment as required.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil conduct needed to provide an orderly, safe, and productive environment in an activity-type classroom with many potential hazards.
  • Keeps informed of the industrial community’s job entry requirements and instructs pupils in the rudiments of getting and retaining these jobs.
  • Evaluates each pupil’s performance, knowledge, and skills.
  • Selects and requisitions instructional aides and equipment; maintains required inventory records; makes purchases as authorized. Required materials/tools may need to be procured through the appropriate PLTW site.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities, organized in-person and/or virtual PLTW training/workshops.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on the individual pupil’s progress.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs. May work with Citizens Advisory Committee in development of specific vocational education programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by administrator.


Supervisory Duties

Supervises students at all times.


Qualifications

Education/Experience/Certificates

Bachelor's Degree and valid Missouri teaching certificate along with Industrial Technology Degree required; or such alternative to these qualifications that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Have PLTW certification or successfully complete PLTW certification coursework in the area of Gateway (6th-8th grade).


Skills and Abilities

Language

Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures/forms, and government regulations and guidelines. Must be able to complete forms, write reports, and engage in written correspondence with parents. Must have the ability to write clearly and complete lesson plans.

Computation

The individual must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students.

Technology

The individual must understand basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use. Will be using district software for recording grades and finding student information.

The individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously; must be able to move around the classroom; must be able to read handwritten and printed materials.

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. This individual will be working with industrial materials, equipment, and tools. Frequent exposure to sharps and chemicals should be expected. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform tasks, such as loading and unloading buses.


Terms of Employment

183 days 5 day extended. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.


Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board

Policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
