The Departments of Biology, Environmental Studies, and Psychology at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) invites applications for a full-time position as a Laboratory Technician II to begin September 1, 2023. Responsibilities include: Preparation of materials and set up for scientific teaching labs and student research. Preparing and managing orders of equipment and supplies. Maintain livestocks and inventory for scientific teaching labs and research. Maintains orderliness and safety of workspaces and teaching labs. Supervises and trains subordinates. This position is full-time for the academic year (38 weeks) and half-time for the summer (14 weeks).

Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepares solutions, specimens, microbial cultures, and other materials for scientific laboratory work.
Sets up and breaks down equipment and supplies for weekly teaching labs.
Conducts laboratory procedures and assists professional personnel in laboratory procedures.
Dissects and collects specimens as directed.
Orders supplies through existing departmental procedures.
Processes and files incoming equipment and supplies.
Maintains supply and equipment inventory. Anticipates supply and equipment needs and advises supervisor of such needs in a timely manner.
Maintains orderliness and security of departmental work areas and teaching labs.
Reports maintenance, security, and housekeeping problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
Makes simple repairs of equipment such as cords, bulbs, fuses, hinges, etc.
Establishes and maintains livestocks, including plants, animals, and microbes.
Learns new procedures related to teaching labs.
Supervisory responsibilities: trains and oversees work of laboratory assistants, student interns, etc. in
laboratory techniques, livestock care, safety, and established procedures; maintains subordinates' attendance records, and evaluates subordinates' work.
Instructs on operation and safety of scientific equipment.
Works with hazardous chemicals and biological, bacteriological, and medical materials and wastes.
Knows and implements current safety regulations for sanitation and sterilization procedures followed in
a laboratory, including disposal of laboratory waste.
Implements established laboratory and chemical safety guidelines in departmental work areas and teaching spaces.

On occasion, helps departments of Chemistry and Physics to:
Assist in laboratory preparation,
Perform other duties as needed.

Other duties as needed and requested.

Job Requirements:
Working knowledge of laboratory practices, tests, techniques, equipment, and terminology relevant to the supported fields.
Ability to perform laboratory work and learn new procedures required for laboratory instruction.
Ability to keep laboratory records, write reports, and determine proper format and procedures for assembling items of information.
Manual dexterity in laboratory practices.
Ability to carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to work independently and responsibly.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, subordinates, and other personnel.
Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished.
Ability to control work through periodic reviews and evaluations.
Ability to evaluate and check subordinates' work for accuracy.
Ability to determine subordinates' training needs and provide such training.
Ability to give written instruction in a precise and understandable manner.

Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Biology or a related field, or equivalent job experience.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of effective supervision.
Experience working with animals in a classroom and laboratory setting.

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, benefited position in the AFSCME Bargaining Unit. Bi-weekly salary is $2,034.87 ($1,017.44 during the summer).
