Prattville / Autauga Humane Shelter Director
Primary Job:
Responsible for the daily operations of the animal shelter, ensuring that humane standards of care are being provided for all animals. Direct and supervise shelter Employees, programs, and activities. Assist the board in development and implementation of goals, policies, procedures, contracts, and budgets. Serve as the facility spokesperson in the community.
Essential Duties:
- Responsible for the development and oversight of all shelter departments and programs. Including but not limited to hiring, supervising, evaluating, discipling, training, development, and termination of facility personnel and / or volunteers.
- Develop, implement, and maintain employee / volunteer procedures and training in all departments and areas of the shelter for safety and compliance.
- Regular meetings with shelter management to review compliance and strategies.
- Works and meets with the board of directors on a regular basis to present reports, develop budgets, discuss important issues, problems, or ideas.
- Responsible for the oversight of the shelters fund raising programs and grants.
- Works to create and maintain relationships with businesses and foundations to promote the shelter’s mission, philosophy, and plans.
- Provides opportunities for community support through volunteering and donations.
- Co-coordinates with rescues.
- Assures the shelter philosophy and mission are relevant and practiced throughout the shelter and community.
- Develop, strategize, and plan for the current and future welfare of the shelter.
- Oversee the purchasing of shelter supplies. Including pharmaceuticals, kennel supplies, facility repair items, office supplies, etc. necessary to operate the facility.
- Assists Public Safety and other agencies officers with enforcing the animal control codes and ordinances and with incoming animals, acts as a hearing officer in animal abuse / neglect hearings and court cases.
- Conduct regular reviews to ensure that all State and local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances relating to the proper treatment and sheltering of animals are being monitored and followed.
Qualifications
- Two years experience in animal shelter management or animal health care management.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Knowledge of State and local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances relating to the proper treatment and sheltering of animals; techniques for properly and safely handling and caring for sick, injured, and/or fractious animals.
- Supervision and teambuilding principles.
- Basic understanding of pharmaceuticals commonly used in the treatment of animals.
- Ability to establish and maintain a respected leadership role.
- Effective supervision techniques.
- Decision-making abilities.
Working Conditions
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. The position requires near, far, and color vision in performing medical procedures and using the computer. Hearing is required when providing phone and counter service. The use of a computer and hearing is required when providing phone and counter service.
License/Certificate
Possession of an Alabama driver’s license and insurable by the shelter insurance carrier. Euthanasia Certificate will be required when the next available class is offered.
