About Us :

Rocky Mount State Historic Site, a Tennessee Historic Site and 50-acre farm that served as the first capital of the Southwest Territory (1790–1792), brings history to life through immersive programs, costumed interpreters, and engaging events. We are seeking a passionate, organized individual to coordinate and expand our living history programming while serving as the primary point of contact for school groups visiting our historic site.

Position Overview :

The Living History Program Coordinator will be key to delivering exceptional educational and visitor experiences at Rocky Mount. This role includes managing school group visits from initial scheduling to on-site coordination, ensuring seamless and engaging experiences for students and teachers. The coordinator will also oversee costumed demonstrations, collaborating with interpreters to bring history to life with accuracy and enthusiasm. Additionally, they will assist in planning and executing special events such as Woolly Days and Harvest, helping to create memorable programs that connect visitors of all ages to the rich history of the early American frontier.

Key Responsibilities :

Living History Leadership :

  • Coordinate and oversee living history programs, working closely with costumed interpreters.
  • Ensure historical accuracy and engaging content.

School Group Coordination :

  • Serve as the primary contact for teachers booking field trips via phone or online forms.
  • Maintain the school group calendar and ensure smooth scheduling.
  • Be on-site to greet groups, manage visit logistics, and provide a warm welcome.
  • Teacher & Student Engagement :

  • Build relationships with educators to encourage repeat visits.
  • Speak to teachers and students about the history of Rocky Mount, setting the tone for their visit.
  • Special Event Support :

  • Assist in the planning and execution of signature events like Woolly Days, Harvest Festival, and others.
  • Help coordinate living history elements, logistics, and visitor engagement during events.
  • Team Collaboration :

  • Work with interpreters, volunteers, and staff to ensure programs and events run smoothly.
  • Assist with other educational programming as needed.
  • Qualifications :

  • Passion for early American history and storytelling.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort speaking to groups of all ages, especially students and teachers.
  • Experience in education, museum work, historical interpretation, or event planning preferred.
  • Flexibility to work part-time, especially during school hours, and occasional weekends for events.
  • A degree in history, education, museum studies, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Position Details :

  • Part-time (20–25 hours / week), with additional hours possible during peak seasons or special events.
  • This position follows Rocky Mount’s seasonal schedule, with limited or no hours during our winter closure period (January–February).
  • Must be available during school hours to greet and coordinate school groups upon arrival and provide on-site support.
  • Must be available for occasional weekends for special events.
  • Reports to the Executive Director.
