Position Summary Under general supervision of Department Supervisor, locate, read, re-read, record, and report the reading of water meters and report related field conditions as necessary for billing.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Remove minor obstructions as necessary, locate and read meter, enter meter reads, trouble codes and other data as required into the hand held meter reading devices.
- Make contact with customers or leave door hangers as needed when meters are inaccessible.
- Report illegal or unusual services, meters or meter box conditions, stuck meters, discrepancies or safety hazards.
- Report any active meters not having a meter record.
- Perform work as required related to route maintenance.
- Notifies customer and Station F in cases where meter registrations exceed 90 gallons per hour.
- Operates mobile meter reading technology and equipment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Furnish own reliable transportation at the contracted rate.
- Possess a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Show evidence of properly licensed and insured vehicle at all times.

- Ability to perform extensive walking, climbing, and lifting requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength, stamina and coordination.
- Ability to read and interpret street maps and meter locations.
- Ability to perform work with speed and accuracy.
- Ability to utilize technical equipment to read meters.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public where situations may be strained.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment.
- Ability to adapt and apply new technology such as iTron, Microsoft Outlook, GDI Portal, Google Earth, smart phone and computer.
- Ability to read and interpret all types of meters within the SJWC service area.
