We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to partner with our experienced engineering team in this environmentally focused industry. Must be currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering degree program. There may be opportunities for a regular, full-time engineering role with Smith & Loveless upon graduation.
A Mechanical Engineer Intern at Smith and Loveless is BOTH Technical and Engaging, working closely with other Designers, Drafters, Engineers, and Senior Leaders in the creation of 3D models for new product designs and ensuring accurate drawings for the onsite production team and. As we are a custom design-build manufacturer, this individual will get to see, touch, and feel the product being designed throughout all phases of the production process.
**This is a year-round PAID internship for a local Kansas City mechanical engineering student available to work 20 hours per week minimum (Monday - Friday)**
Qualifications
Skills/Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Degree at an accredited school in their sophomore or junior year. (2026 or 2027 grad)
- Ability to work 20 hrs/wk year-round in Lenexa, Kansas
- Good student mentality and positive attitude.
- Must be proficient with 3D modeling, AutoCAD, and common drafting practices preferred.
- Experience with developing manufacturing standard documents and production drawings/documents is a benefit.
- Good communication skills (written and oral), ability to communicate technical requirements, meet deadlines, and detail oriented.
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives with limited supervision.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and calendar.
Job Duties
- Complete production or design projects while coordinating with supervisors and other departments.
- Create 3D models using Inventor from specs provided by engineers working with customers.
- Build 2D drawings with proper dimensions and annotations for production to occur accurately.
- Working closely with other design, production, and application engineers, as well as engineering managers, with a team spirit to produce excellent models, drawings, and company products.
- Moving flexibly from project to project as business needs dictate to fulfill orders in a timely fashion.
- Other duties as assigned by Managers.
- Keep work area neat and clean.
