What you will be doing:

Under general direction, performs on-site preventative maintenance of State owned ferry terminals.  This includes preventive maintenance and repairs to mechanical, electrical and structural systems of State owned ferry terminal facilities. Duties require understanding and operational skills mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing and heating systems, painting, welding, equipment operating and labor trade skills.  A heavy-duty boom truck must be operated as part of duties, which requires a Commercial Drivers License.  Work ranges in lower complexity preventive maintenance and lubrication of bridge components and painting of buildings and facilities to more complex repair of Syncrolift controls systems and building fire alarm controls.  (Job requires frequent travel on commercial airlines as well as small planes and ferrys.)

This is a shoreside office position. If filled in Ketchikan, the position will be located at 3361 Tongass Ave KTN, AK 99901

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need to possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Problem-Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • Electrical: Knowledge of electrical equipment, components, instruments, and systems, including their design, installation, testing, uses, repair, or maintenance.
  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, installation, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Painting: Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to apply paint and other protective coating materials on drywall, wood, metal, glass, and other surfaces
  • Plumbing and Pipefitting: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to install, maintain, or repair pipelines, pipe systems, and fixtures, including water, air, steam, gas, chemicals, or sewage

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED 

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position. A conditional hire approval can be given to applicants that do not yet possess a Class A CDL. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain a Class A CDL within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.   

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
