What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biomonitoring Epidemiologist - Advanced (DOH/CHP #10103359) position at State of New Mexico?
Posting Details
This posting will be used for ongoing recruitment and may close at any time. Applicant list may be screened more than once.
The New Mexico Department of Health's (NMDOH) mission is "To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico." The New Mexico branch of the Four Corners States Biomonitoring Consortium (4CSBC) is within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB) in the Center for Health Protection under the Public Health Division in NMDOH. The CDC-funded Biomonitoring Program assesses disproportionate exposure to environmental chemicals among communities.
Why does the job exist?
The 4CSBC aims to 1) expand heavy metals exposure surveillance to rural populations; and 2) characterize exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in high exposure occupations such as firefighting. By building upon existing partnerships and expertise, this project fills critical geographical gaps in the four Western states with known elevated exposure to metals and PFAS. The findings will inform the development of targeted state health programs aimed at protecting vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous and pediatric communities, from the adverse effects of exposure to these contaminants. The two main strategies for this project are: community biomonitoring focusing on PFAS surveillance among firefighters, and state-wide population and target surveillance targeting environmental metals exposure, particularly in communities near mining sites. The incumbent will also staff the EHEB on-call line one to two days a month.
How does it get done?
1) Submit an annual IRB outlining the goals, objectives, methodologies, data management protocols, recruitment and consent of participants, participant protections, dissemination of results to participants, protection of privacy and confidentiality, and other required elements.
2) Collaborate with the 4CSBC to develop project materials including methodology (e.g., protocol for participant recruitment, standard operating procedures for sample collection, etc.) and outreach (e.g., cover letter to participants, results reporting table, etc.)
3) Coordinate field work, deploy participant surveys, and facilitate field sample collection and storage.
4) Serve as the public point of contact for New Mexico's biomonitoring efforts.
5) Assist with statistical analysis of data collected for biomonitoring.
