Two positions are available - the Executive office and the Division of Parks.
Job Description:
The Department of Natural Resources is hiring two Information Specialists to work in our Salt Lake headquarters as part of our Public Affairs team. The specialist (Public Information Officer) works to strengthen the state’s natural resource public outreach and tell our story. The candidates selected for these positions (one in DNR administration and one in the Division of Utah State Parks) will assist with a broad range of communications tailored to various stakeholders, including the Legislature, the media, the public, and more. These positions assist with media relations, marketing (traditional and digital), and public education/outreach.
The successful candidates should be capable of taking initiative and leading the agency’s communication efforts. The team needs an individual who brings an energetic and innovative mindset to inform and influence public perception on complex issues and take the agency’s brand to the next level.

Write and edit material for accuracy, format, and arrangement of material.
Develop messaging to increase public understanding and neutralize negative messaging,
Create multimedia content for print and digital avenues that support an overall communications startegy.
Assists in managing social media accounts and websites
Assists in maintaining a consistent voice and brand across all avenues, including website, press releases and social media
Assists in the creation, production, and implementation of digital media campaigns
Coordinate with news and other public media as directed, including assisting with press releases, press conferences, media interviews, etc.
Assist in coordinating and facilitating internal communication efforts.
Other duties as assigned.
- Experience in journalistic writing, photography, marketing graphic design, and video creation.
- Ability to communicate complicated or sensitive information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to edit and contribute to scientific documents and create public-friendly material to accompany them.
- Experience managing social media accounts.
- Experience with web content, ideally in a WordPress environment.
- Experience with the Adobe Creative Cloud program, especially InDesign, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
- Experience creating and executing strategic communication plans.
- Ability to find creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes.
- Professional experience working in a collaborative team environment.
Preference may be given to:
A college degree in communication, journalism, English, public relations, or advertising.
Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Google Ads, social media campaigns, and similar platforms.
Excellent journalistic writing skills, with an understanding of AP Style.
Applicants with working experience or professional experience in natural resource management and state parks, and knowledge of the Great Salt Lake Basin.
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
