Peer Career Advisors (PCAs) play an invaluable role as paraprofessionals in the Center for Career Exploration & Development at Ithaca College. PCAs educate and assist fellow students on career development topics through drop-ins and presentations, and professionally represent The Career Center at events and tabling across campus. 

This paid position also includes the benefits of getting matched with staff mentors for career development guidance, exposure to thousands of job and internship opportunities, and many chances to network with recruiters and alumni. 

Ithaca College’s Center for Career Exploration & Development seeks dependable student leaders with a drive to help others and a commitment to their own professional development for this critical position. 

Training:

PCAs must participate in biannual training in its entirety, which is held every August before the fall semester begins (typically the entire week before the first day of classes), and every January before the spring semester begins (typically within the 3 business days before the first day of classes). PCAs are trained by office staff on the following career development topics (in addition to paraprofessional career coaching techniques): 

  • Resume and cover letter editing and development 
  • Job and internship searching 
  • Professional networking and alumni mentors 
  • Interview preparation 
  • The student employment process at Ithaca College
  • Graduate school search and application process 
  • Using online resources such as Handshake, Alumni Directory, and Career Shift  

Job Description:

  • Assist fellow students from diverse backgrounds with career development-related topics on a walk-in basis between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the academic year (hours subject to change), when classes are in session. 
  • PCAs must commit to 6-12 hours per week in the Career Center; 5-11 hours assisting students during drop-ins and working at the front desk, and 1 hour in weekly Staff/Training Meetings (Thursdays at 12:10pm). 
  • Become experienced users of the Career Center’s online resources (ex. Handshake, LinkedIn, CareerShift) and teach students how to use them. 
  • Maintain confidential records of student contacts/services provided. 
  • Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectful College community 
  • Represent the Career Center at campus-wide events such as Job & Internship Fairs, Majors & Minors Fair, and Career Opportunities Week (COW) workshops and info sessions, which may include greeting recruiters, checking students and recruiters in, sharing resources, answering questions, etc. 
  • Table for the Career Center to help promote events, services, resources, campaigns, etc. 
  • Co-present (with other PCAs or staff) career development workshops for students to classes, clubs, organizations, teams, etc. 
  • Promote career events, services, and resources through social media and word of mouth. 
  • Maintain the Career Resource Center including keeping the drop-in spaces clean and neat, and restocking paper materials on the resource kiosk and tables 
  • Provide feedback to supervisor regarding Career Center events, services, and resources in relation to student needs. 
  • Other career-related projects as assigned.

  • Ability to present yourself professionally and confidently to students, recruiters, and alumni

  • Ability to learn career-related software programs and internet resources 
  • Prior career development training is not required. All majors are welcome to apply. Students from underrepresented populations are encouraged to apply. Must have sophomore standing by Fall training date. Candidates must be in good academic standing to be considered for this position.  

Pay Rate:  $15.50
