This position is central to the missionaries' role to 'Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.'
The Mgr, Interpretation, Translation, and Language Evaluation Services will manage the interpretation, translation, and language evaluation services staff at the MTC. The interpretation/translation staff provides language interpretation for missionaries during their stay at the Missionary Training Center and completes translation project requests for the MTC in partnership with the Publishing Services Department. The language evaluations team completes the evaluation of second language abilities for both missionaries and applicants.
Reports to the Mgr, Training 3
Manages Interpretation and translation Services at the Missionary Training Center (30%)
• Facilitates language interpretation for in-house missionaries by overseeing a staff of 50 employees, volunteers, and service missionaries
• Coordinates with the Training department of the MTC in determining interpretation needs for individual missionaries
• Handles fluctuating needs by increasing or reducing staff appropriately
• Provides interpretation and translation services for ecclesiastical leaders
• Acquires and maintains equipment used by the department
Manages interpretation staff, hiring, and training (30%)
• Recruits, interviews, and hires language interpreter trainers to oversee:
• Interpreters for 65 languages taught or spoken regularly at the MTC
• Trainings for team meetings
• Completion of translation projects
• Monitoring and reporting for future translation needs
• Recruits, interviews, and hires Language Interpretation Coordinators to oversee:
• Scheduling interpreters
• Monitoring the work of and evaluating interpreters
• Interpreting
• Testing, maintaining, and purchasing interpretation equipment
• Designs, develops and maintains the MTC language interpreter certification program (in coordination with Church Headquarters)
• Evaluates interpreters’ skills through regular testing and progress reviews
• Provides follow-up training and evaluations
• Expands capability among interpreters by providing growth opportunities such as guest speakers who are specialists in the field
• Develops language interpretation learning and testing simulation
• Manages the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce)
• Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line
Manages Language Evaluations and Language Evaluation Staff (20%)
• Facilitates language evaluations of all languages taught at MTCs for missionaries and applicants by overseeing a staff of 25 employees
• Provides continuing in-service training of evaluators and provide updated materials and policy information
• Conducts evaluations as needed
• Manages the work of other employees (may include mixed workforce)
• Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line
Manages Translation of MTC Curriculum in partnership with PSD (20%)
• Translates missionary-facing, teacher-facing, and institutional-facing curricular documents.
• Translations of assessment instruction and content.
• Assists in the translation of special projects and presentations for the Missionary Department
Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 4 years of experience in the interpretation or translation field, or equivalent combination of both education and experience
• Supervisory experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software quickly
• Exceptional communication skills
• Public relations skills
• Ability to make good on-the-spot judgment calls
