A well-established marine services provider is seeking a skilled Machinist to join its Shipyard Machine Shop. The Machinist will be responsible for operating manual and CNC machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify metal components for vessels, marine equipment, and boat systems. This role plays a critical part in supporting boatbuilding, vessel maintenance, and repair operations by producing precision-machined parts that meet industry standards.
Responsibilities- Precision Machining & Repair:
- Operate lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to fabricate, modify, and repair boat components.
- Perform custom machining on shafts, bearings, bushings, propeller components, hydraulic parts, and other boat-related parts.
- Set up and adjust machine tools, workpieces, and tooling for optimal precision.
- Blueprint & Spec Interpretation:
- Read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and boat repair manuals to ensure accurate machining.
- Work with tight tolerances and perform quality control checks using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measurement tools.
- Material Handling & Inspection:
- Work with marine-grade materials, including stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, and carbon steel.
- Perform inspections on machined components to ensure they meet required specifications before installation or delivery.
- Identify and resolve defects or inconsistencies in machined parts.
- Collaboration & Safety Compliance:
- Work closely with welders, fabricators, mechanics, and engineers to support vessel maintenance and new boat construction projects.
- Follow all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA/boatyard regulations to ensure a safe work environment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-maintained machine shop workspace.
- Experience:
- 3 years of experience as a machinist in a boatyard, industrial, or heavy manufacturing setting.
- Background in marine repair or boat component machining is preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficient in operating lathes, milling machines, boring mills, and other machining equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and technical specifications.
- Skilled in using measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, shaft alignments, and marine propulsion components is a plus.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in a shipyard environment, including exposure to noise, dust, grease, and fluctuating temperatures.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Certifications (Preferred but Not Required):
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Safety Certification
- Forklift or overhead crane operation certification
- Shipyard Competent Person (SCP) Certification
