SUMMARY:
The Director of Finance position is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. This position ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. The Director of Finance oversees general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, grants, accounts receivable/collection and district banking.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, develops, and oversees budget process each fiscal year which includes developing overall budget strategy and long-range planning, obtaining broad range of input, prioritizing needs, allocating resources among priorities, communicating with local stakeholders, staff and Board, and developing mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation of financial performance.
- Plans and directs the accounting operations of the school district, including general accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, grants, accounts receivable/collection and district banking.
- Ensures that the district complies with all federal, state, and district regulations and policies.
- Assists in the recruitment and training of business office personnel.
- Provides financial information to departments and schools as needed.
- Prepares district financial statements in accordance with GAAP for governmental fund
accounting.
- Prepares and coordinates the preparation of work papers and documentation for the
financial audit, including completion of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
- Responsible for high level accounting functions. Includes review and analysis of accounts, financial statements and accounting processes. Provides technical accounting assistance to schools and other district departments as needed.
- Assists Chief Financial Officer with annual budget development. Manages budget implementation, compliance and related follow-up.
- Prepares and submits all reports for the Colorado Department of Education including electronic data transfers.
- Supervises student athletic/activity accounting. Maintains financial records. Prepares and reviews reports to athletic/activity directors and principals.
- Responsible for accounting and reporting of the Thompson Education Foundation. Includes tracking of daily activity and reporting to TEF Executive Director.
- Supervises the accounting for fixed assets and coordinates annual fixed asset inventory.
- Monitors/reviews internal audits of accounts.
- Establishes and maintains an effective line of communication that disseminates information and provides training and technical assistance to appropriate persons within the District.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in a business, financial or related field or equivalent work experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five years experience in governmental fund accounting.
- Minimum of five years experience in managing an accounting function in a district or company.
- Experience in public school accounting preferred.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Directly supervises the following positions: Accountant (1), Accounting/Budget Specialist (1), and Accounting Specialist-Grants/SPED (1). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. This position is responsible for the hiring process for these positions. This position is responsible for approximately 3 employee evaluations.
