Job Overview
DISTINGUISING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Computer Network Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance and management of desktop computers and peripheral equipment associated with the Town’s computer network systems, primarily in the Public Safety environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Management Services. The incumbent performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Installs, troubleshoots and maintains desktop hardware, mobile devices including tablets and ipads, client software and peripheral devices such as printers, scanners, airlink modems;
Installs, troubleshoots and maintains server software and operating system, patches and connectivity devices and interfaces for Windows and Unix based servers;
Installs, troubleshoots and maintains VPN support for mobile and remote access in Police Department and EMS.
Supports CAD, RMS system software and scheduling software for Police and dispatch;
Supports eReports and electronic reporting of police reports for all calls;
Supports other software as needed in areas such as priority dispatch (ProQa), electronic booking and fingerprinting and interfaces to DCJS;
Responds to user requests for assistance for hardware and software issues such as moves, adds and changes, system lockouts;
Manages user network accounts and profiles;
Assists in the selection and purchase of software and related equipment;
Position also requires scheduled on-call activities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles, practices, terms and equipment used in the operation and management of a computer network; ability to perform repair of hardware and related equipment; strong interpersonal skills applied in understanding first responders and their service needs; ability to communicate clearly in a written and verbal manner; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; position also requires security clearance from DCJS and fingerprints on file.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field PLUS four (4) years of full-time professional experience in a public safety environment including two (2) years of experience involving specific responsibility for a network environment utilizing both Windows and Unix;
OR
An Associate’s degree in Computer Science or a related field PLUS four (4) years of full-time professional experience in a public safety environment including two (2) years of experience involving specific responsibility for a network environment utilizing both Windows and Unix.
