MAINTAINER II – PUBLIC WORKS
$23.73 - $27.82 (Hourly)
(Contract Currently Under Negotiations)
General Statement of Duties: Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of roadways, roadsides, bridges, parks, recreation areas and public grounds; may operate and may make minor repairs to mechanical equipment requiring moderate skill in operation such as trucks, spreaders, manual equipment, snow plows and less skilled operations on large equipment; may do rough grading and tree removal on roads, sewers and other areas as directed; may erect highway signs; may act as helper to skilled tradesman or do simple trade work; may serve as trainee in a craft such as welder, electrician, mechanic, painter, mason or carpenter; performs manual labor and traffic control duties on job sites; performs aerial work when needed; performs other related work or work of a lesser grade as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the supervision of Superintendent, Foreman, or other authorized supervisor.
Supervision Exercised: By assignment, may direct the work of one or more employees, normally of a lower grade, by assigning tasks, inspecting work or keeping equipment in working order.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable physical stamina to work under arduous conditions; ability to follow written and oral instructions; as semi-skilled laborer, some knowledge of physical properties of standard construction materials; some knowledge of mechanical principles; ability to use and make minor repairs to small tools and simple mechanical equipment; ability to operate standard gearshift trucks with snow plows and sanders and other less complex construction equipment; ability to work long hours during storms and other emergencies; ability to work well with others.
Qualifications: Two (2) years employment as laborer in field of construction work involving operation and care of trucks and other mechanical equipment used in construction OR two (2) years training in one of the skilled trades and one (1) year of experience in construction operations OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B to operate equipment. (PLEASE PROVIDE A COPY OF YOUR CDL LICENSE WITH YOUR APPLICATION) Must be available to work nights, holidays, and weekends during snow, ice and /or wind storms, and other emergencies involving the Department of Public Works.
