Part-time Library Circulation Assistant (9 hours/ week)

  • Tuesdays: 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Wednesdays: 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Thursdays: 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Summary Job Description: Working under the direct supervision of the Technology Services/Reference Librarian and Teen Librarian, the circulation assistant is responsible for providing all patrons with superior circulation, reference, and information services.

Mandatory Requirements for all Town Employees: A) You are required to understand and abide-by all safety work practices for yourself and your co-workers. B) You are required to understand and use customer service “best practices” when dealing with the public, peers and co-workers by treating everyone fairly, with understanding, empathy, and professionalism.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Circulation Assistant is to perform the following duties and responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

  • Charging and discharging materials
  • Searching database for location and status of materials in our library database and in other network libraries for purposes of locating material for interlibrary loan requests
  • Searches database for status of persons applying for a borrower card
  • Creates registration records for new and out-of-town patrons and updates existing patron records
  • Searches patron records for information on current loan status, overdues, copy holds
  • Creates holds for patron requests; completes data needed for implementing
  • Performs check-in, process and updates magazine records for circulation
  • Updates “new” material to regular circulation
  • Provides assistance in searching the electronic catalog (OPAC), the Internet and other electronic databases.
  • Answers telephone and on-site questions.
  • Collects and records money received
  • Prepares patron library cards.
  • Assists public in use of the copy machine, faxes and occasional technology requests
  • Performs closing routines.
  • Assists Library Director with purchasing requests by preparing purchasing forms
  • Examines overdue print-out notices from library network, and checks shelves for missing materials before sending out notices.
  • Assists Librarians with a variety of clerical tasks; checks shelves for overdue books and other materials; re-shelves materials and maintains orderly arrangement of materials on shelves.
  • Assists in preparation of displays and prepares craft items for use in children’s story hours and/or special programs

Supervisory Responsibilities: None required.

Specific Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Excellent computer skills
  • Knowledge of automated and networked library environment. If not familiar, must be able to learn.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility within working schedule and office staff.
  • Ongoing knowledge of current popular literature and children’s literature.

Qualifications: High School degree (or equivalent). Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science or related field preferred. A minimum of two years of relevant post high school courses and experience will be considered. Public Library experience a plus. Must be willing to obtain additional training as needed.
